Can you tell me how I can sew stretch velvet panne fabric with a conventional sewing machine (not a serger or overlock machine)? I know it can be done - I just don't know what kind of needle, thread, tension, etc. to use. Thanks.

I pulled out my copy of Sandra Betzina's Fabric Savvy. She suggests sewing it as you would a stable knit. So, to answer your questions: use a 75/11 HS stretch needle, a good-quality polyester thread since it has some stretch (wind bobbin slowly), and a tiny zigzag (0.5mm width, 2.5 mm length) or stretch stitch. You shouldn't need to adjust your tension, but if you could reduce the pressure on the presser foot that would be great. If not, keep your finger pushing into the fabric behind the presser foot to prevent stretching. Good luck!
