Patching a Plaster Ceiling

i have a plastered ceiling that was cracked and sagging in one spot (a square about 2x2). We cut out the old plaster and we were going to replace it with sheetrock. Our problem is that when we took the measurements for the sheetrock the thickness of the plaster was anywhere from 1/4" to 13/4". Is there a way we can replace the plaster with something other than sheetrock? Any info would be extremely helpful.

Use a piece of screening larger than your sagging area and plaster the overlap. We had this happen and pulled off a ceiling molding and anchored the screening (not necessary but definitely offered more support) at one side. When this area has completely dried, put a light coat of plaster over the entire screen and let dry completely. Use as many layers as you need. Then paint. Ours turned out well and has held up many years with no sagging or problems.
