Chill Your Cake Layers

Put your cake layers in the freezer for an hour or two before frosting them. They will firm up and won't crack and crumble when you apply the frosting.

My mom also does that. It seems the moisture in the cake expands when it freezes which makes the cake comes out more moist and fluffy when it's time to eat it.
