We replaced some washers in a dripping tap and now we suddenly have "water hammer" a loud shuddering noise when water turns on, especially from the washing machine. We have installed "anti water hammer washers" in an attempt to get rid of it, but to no avail. A little help?

The google searches were all based on the US water systems (I assume)- I am in Australia. We use different a different system, they were not helpful at all. Since posting I have had the Water Authority "check" the water main (but they replaced it) in case we were receiving too much pressure and no plumber want to touch us because water hammer is supposed to happen when you turn the taps off not when you turn the taps on. We have turned the air con tap off and that has stopped it, but what will we do in summer?

Perhaps they are not vented properly.
