Check with a local IICRC certified cleaner. Most would be willing to guide you through the scientific process of cleaning. Most carpets require hot water extraction cleaning using an alkaline prespray or emulsifying cleaning solution followed by an acidic neutralizing rinse. Specialty stains such as rust and kool-aid have specific spot removers made for their specific type of spot.stain.

The best stain remover I've found is called R2X by Shaw Flooring Company. I received a free sample of it in the mail and it took out stains that had been in my carpet for about 6 months that other stain removers couldn't do anything for.

"Spot Shot" (blue and orange can) is the best carpet spot remover I have ever used. You can find it at Wal-Mart and most grocery stores. Good luck with your project!!

One figure out what the stain is. If it is a protein base I have found a little Era and Regular Dawn with warm water and a little brush will take out most stains. You can use a little Oxy clean mixed into it as well if the stain does not come right out.
