What would you normally wear? Whether or not you choose to wear heels depends on how much self confidence you and your escort have. I know guys who don't care if the girl that they are with is taller than them or not.
Flats are going to keep you from appearing a lot taller. Don't wear your hair in a big poofy style which will help to shorten yourself from head to toe.
I agree with both "Lorelei" and "redhatterb". No poofy hair or high heels if your date is self-conscious of his height, that's just common courtesy. Otherwise, dress as you would without this consideration. Since you previously mentioned he was a best friend and not a new boyfriend, I'm guessing you know what will make him most comfortable and will dress accordingly.
I hope and suspect you know this, but high heels, high hair, fancy clothes and make-up don't make you more attractive to a dear friend: What makes a gal truly attractive to those she cares for is her kindness, compassion, and composure. Relax, be yourself and best wishes that the two of you have a great time! :-)

Personally speaking my honey is 5'5" tall and the biggest little man I have ever been around. While I am 6'1" tall, he refers to me as 'his own personal model'. Really to us it doesn't matter that I am taller then him because when we sit down we are still eye to eye & when we lay down we are nose to nose and very comfortable with ourselves and you should be too!
My son-in-law is an inch taller than my daughter. For their wedding, My daughter picked shoes she loved (not real expensive) and had a shoemaker cut the heels down. You'd never know they weren't made that way! In her wedding pictures, they are the same height. I think she obsessed more than my SIL about this! You could try something like this if you don't want to wear flats.
Remember that a great smile is always your best accessory. How you ask toward your best friend/date will make or break your evening. You can relax and enjoy if you smile!
