Avoiding Dishwasher Detergent Stains on Pots and Pans

How can white dishwasher detergent stains on pots and pans be avoided?

I found that my stainless steel pots did not get any stains but anything aluminum did. Mostly I hand wash my pots and pans but from time to time do put the stainless steel in the dishwasher.

The dishwasher discolored/dulled my pots and pans. I used an SOS pad on them and they look a little better, but I handwash them all now.

If you have a dispenser for a rinse agent such as Jet Dry, fill it with white vinegar. Effective, cheap.
