This didn't work for me: homemade acne remedy using Milk of Magnesia. Does anyone have other suggestions on getting rid of pimples?

A dermatologist explained to me that my body produces excessive oil due to an hormonal imbalance. The excessive oil contains bacteria which causes my acne.

In order to control my acne, I have to "kill off" the bacteria. After trying different treatments for well over ten years, and that includes an oral antibiotic, this is what works best for me.

I use Wal-mart's generic version of Cetaphil Skin Cleanser at night with added tree tea oil. I didn't measure, just guessed. I would guess I used about a teaspoon to the 16 ounce container. I use Cetaphil anti-bacteria bar soap on my face when I shower in the morning. Be careful, and keep any cleansers away from your eyes.

About once a week, I add about a teaspoon of baking soda to the soap lather when I shower for deep cleaning.

I use witch hazel with added tree tea oil as an astringent after cleansing my face. Again just a guess with measurement, 1 teaspoon to the 16 ounce bottle.

This is what works for me. I don't have perfect skin, but using this method has improved my complexion a great deal. It took me a long time to come up with this. Tea tree oil is good for using as an anti-bacteria treatment. I bought mine at Wal-mart. A little goes a long way.

Good luck, I hope you find your solution.

I know you will think "what? urine? but this has worked for many people. Here is a link to people who have successfully used it. Read a lot of the comments on how to use it and what your own urine contains.

It might also help to Google 'diet and pimples/diet and acne'. There are certain foods that make it worse :-(

I've had really good luck with the anti bacterial hand sanitizer. Even though I'm 53 I get the hormonal blemishes and cysts. When I see a blemish forming, a red spot, or a sore spot like a black and blue under the skin which is my sign of a cyst,

I put the hand sanitizer on right away; then, as often as I think of it; and then especially at night. I swear they never develop into cysts and the soreness and underlying redness goes away mostly in a day, at the most two days.

Milk of magnesia didn't work for me.

You might crush a regular aspirin finely, mix with a bit of water and apply it to a blemish. Aspirin has salycitic (sp?) acid in it which is used in a lot of over the counter blemish cleansers, treatments, etc.

Be careful with benzoyl peroxide; I, who don't have allergies, sensitive skin, etc., have a horrible reaction to it. my face swells and gets welts on it. Horrible and it hurts, so I'm very leery of benzoyl peroxide although I've heard it works wonders for some people.

I've heard the honey remedy works too. Before antibiotics, people used honey to heal wounds.
Also, although I wish I was disciplined enough to do it, spread honey on your face and neck for ten minutes twice a day. Supposedly this will clear up actual scarring! I've heard it a lot so I think it would work.

Good luck!

I have stubborn acne and have never really found a home remedy that worked consistently. The best thing I found was tea tree oil. Dab it on a pimple with a q-tip. Warning: it smells absolutely awful! You may want to wash it off within a few minutes. And the price tag for tea tree oil might lessen the appeal of using it.

Proactiv works pretty well for me, and I recently saw a dermatologist who gave me a prescription (I haven't gotten the medicine yet). Not exactly home remedies, but unfortunately, my skin needs strong medicine.

Wash your face with soap every night before going to bed. I use dial soap. I also use olive oil mixed with spearmint for my dry skin. I heat up the olive oil with the spearmint in it to release the oil (you will be able to smell it). The spearmint acts as an astringent.

Another way to help with acne is to think about how much stress there is in your life--your body reacts to stress in ways like acne.

Request: Home Remedies for Acne

Archived on 12/11/2009

I have oily skin and so of course I am prone to pimples. I am looking for a homemade remedy for daily care of my skin. What can I use on the spot for the pimples that I get here and there? Also, like many other people, I have scars from previous pimples. How do I get rid of those? Please help. Thanks in advance to everybody for your suggestions.

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

If you don't have deep scars, but dark spots they will eventually go away, but it may take several months to several years. (My skin looks good now and it was pretty bad when I was young) I've found that you can do more damage by over-washing your face. Wash it no more than twice a day, morning and night with a mild cleaner. More than that and your face will produce more oils to try and counteract your excess washing. (It will rebel.)

Buy Stridex pads in "Gentle" (or another brand) made for sensitive skin and wipe your face down with one of these pads before bed every night (after washing) or after working out or doing sports. They are easy to carry around. Be sure they have the active ingredient "Salicylic Acid" in them. The Salicylic Acid kills the bacteria on your skin. If these are too strong for your face, then instead follow your face washing with an astringent that has no alcohol in it. Astringents clean deep down in the pores and get out dirt that you don't normally see. Do not overuse any of these products or you face will rebel and make even more oil.

Wash you pillow case with bleach (to kill germs) and only use it for 2 days. Sleep on one side the first night then turn it over and use the other side the next, then use a new, clean and bleached pillowcase on the third night. Bleach your wash cloths and towels, too. I use paper towels to dry my face so I don't get germs from towels. Wash you face with a clean, bleached cloth and not with your hands. If you like to use an exfoliating product like "Apricot scrub" don't do this more than once a week or it will irritate and dry out your face. Be sure to moisturize you face after using a product like this. Buy a light moisturizer that has no scent.

I recommend you never use soap to wash you face, but instead use a cream make-up remover instead, or even wash with a face moisturizing lotion then follow with an astringent. What I do is put the moisturizer on my face when it's dry then massage it in with my fingertips then either get in the shower and rinse it off or use a washcloth and warm water to gently remove the face lotion and make-up. This will clean your face without your face rebelling and making more oil because it's over-dry.

Swimming in a chlorine pool can help acne and some people get relief from acne with moderate sunshine, while in some people the sun only makes their acne worse. Be sure your make-up is unscented and high quality. Never buy a cheap, discount make-up.

As far as getting rid of your acne scars, you'll have to wait until your face has totally cleared. Once your face is clear you can exfoliate by scrubbing your face with finely ground cornmeal mixed with apple cider vinegar. This exfoliates the skin. It's a trick models use to take off the top layer of old dead skin cells and get down to new healthy skin. You can do this twice a week. Your skin needs time to make new cells (from below) then you can help the old cells come off faster by exfoliating once or twice a week with the cornmeal and vinegar paste. It makes your skin glow, but don't overdo. If you exfoliate more than once a week when you have acne you'll only irritate your skin and make matters worse.

Acne is caused by bacteria, so wash your hands often and keep them away from your face. Use a make-up that has a pump (so you can't contaminate it) and always wash your hands before applying it Never share face, eye or any make-up with friends. It's best for your face if you don't wear any foundation or make-up on your face at all or at least when you're home away from work or school. But if you do wear make-up and use a brush to apply it, be sure to wash your foundation or powered blush brush twice a week with shampoo mixed with water and a bit of bleach to kill any germs. If you use make-up brushes, buy 2 brushes so you can switch them out and use one while the other one dries.

I hope I've helped, I had some pretty bad acne when I was young and these are things I've learned the hard way. (06/09/2009)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

In this day and age, I don't think anyone with bad acne that is leaving scars should be using home remedies. There are wonderful medicines that work to cure acne. A dermatologist would be the best to see, but even family doctors would be able to prescribe effective medication that would clear up your acne. (06/11/2009)

You can use some apple cider vinegar, about a 1/4 of a teaspoon and 1 drop of Tea Tree oil on a cotton swab and apply it to affected areas before you go to bed. If you think it might rub off, just put a band aid over it. They should clear up over night. (01/19/2009)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

My skincare regimen is as follows. I hope you can use some of the advice.

Before you touch your face, always always always wash your hands. I wash my face only twice per day to prevent over drying.

  1. Wash face with warm water to open pores.
  2. Wash with PanOxyl (10% Benzoyl peroxide face wash).
  3. Every other day, wash your face with honey and sugar. The sugar should be coarse enough so you can feel it on your face. Leave on for about 10 minutes and massage into your skin to prevent it from dripping. Wash with warm water mixed with baking soda.
  4. Be sure to pat dry with a clean towel.
  5. Use a Benzoyl peroxide cream (I use whatever is on sale, 10% solution).
  6. Apply an oil free moisturizer with Alpha Hydroxy acid.
  7. Use sunscreen that is oil free.

Don't pick at your blackheads or try to squeeze them out. Don't use those blackhead strips. Try not to use anything with chemicals (except for the benzoyl peroxide). They will all irritate your skin. Witch hazel and apple cider vinegar are great to freshen up during the day.

Toothpaste can make it worse. Also, be sure you have a very clean pillow case. I found that changing mine every other day helps a lot from keeping dirt off my face while I sleep. (01/31/2009)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

Last week I started to get a blemish also known as a cyst; the kind that feel like a black and blue bruise and cause a swelling under the skin, and are reddish color on the skin, but no "head" on it. I had heard, actually I believe I saw it on this site, that putting some anti bacterial hand cleanser on blemishes help them go away. I put it on in the morning and I swear by that evening some of the soreness and swelling had gone down and in three days it was completely gone. No scar, redness, swelling, soreness. Usually, I try to pop them and then I get a three week healing window and a scar. Now I use it on all my blemishes.

However, I have found that if I pop the blemish first, then apply the anti bacterial hand cleanser, they take longer to heal; don't ask me why.

I had no luck with toothpaste, Maalox, Milk of Magnesia, or Clearasil. I'm allergic to Benzoyl peroxide and Tea Tree oil. Tea tree is something of a miracle anyway; I'd try Tea Tree if I were you. Sometimes it helps if I put some 2% salicylic cleanser directly onto the blemish; I have pretty good luck. The cleanser itself dries them out pretty well. All of the answers you received from these wonderful people are all good; see what works for you. Good luck. (03/20/2009)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

The best thing to do is go to the doctor and have him treat you with something like oral tetracycline before you scar. If you can't get it that way, in the United States, you can buy it in tablet form in the fish department at the pet store. It is used for water in the fish tank but works for humans. My son cured a bad bite from a cat that way in an emergency. It needs to be taken continuously for awhile. (02/01/2007)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

When a pimple is beginning to form, apply ice to it for a few minutes. Lemon juice on pimples will also help kill the bacteria that makes pimples worse. Mixing benzoyl peroxide (available over the counter) with prescription Clindamycin cream (half and half) works like a charm for stubborn acne. Immunity building supplements - zinc, echinacea, golden seal, and vitamin C - taken every day - can help acne as well. A chinese herbal product called "Lienchiaopaitu" - taken four times daily - is also helpful.

Special soaps, cleansers, masks and toners DO NOT HELP ACNE so don't waste your money on them. (02/01/2007)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

If you have access to a doctor, you really should have it checked out, especially if it is scarring. Sometimes, depending on your medical insurance or what treatment is available to you, acne treatment medicines can be less expensive (over time especially) than home remedies, especially if the medication works well. Just a thought. (02/01/2007)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

Depending on what is causing your acne there are different approaches to getting rid of it. Acne can be caused by diet or hormone imbalance or allergies. These are the things I recommended to my daughters. Try them to see which works best for you.

1)baking soda on a soft cloth soaked with peroxide.

2)sugar on a soft cloth with peroxide

3)a little dab of raw honey on the blemish and let it dry 4)mouthwash on a cotton ball (if it kills bacteria in the mouth it can kill it on skin)

5)antibiotic ointment on the blemish

6)milk of magnesia spread on the skin and allowed to dry then rinse completely (absorbs oil on oily skin)

7)boiled herbs such as chamomile or clover blossoms, make a tea from the herbs and use it as a rinse for your face. (02/02/2007)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

I used some baking soda and I saw difference in my skin the first time I used it. Just mix baking soda and water together to make a paste and massage it on your skin for like 20 seconds then wash it right off you don't want to leave it on too long or it will dry out your skin. My acne is really bad so if this works for me it should work for you. (05/21/2007)

tooth paste

I had really bad acne! My brother did too. One day I saw him and I was just amazed at how great his skin looked. I asked him how he did it. He said believe it or not just dabbing a little Colgate toothpaste on your pimples before you go to bed will kill them, and they will be gone when you wake up in the morning. So I tried it and it really works. (06/29/2007)

Wash it off with lukewarm water and pat dry. Put some eskinol papaya toner on a cotton bud and gently wipe it on your face. I hope it works for you. I also had acne, still have some scars. The ONLY thing that worked for me was less washing. I found out the hard way that I was washing too much and irritating the situation even more. I wash at night and use astringent in the morn. That's it. Sunblock, sunblock everyday. xoxo (10/15/2008)

RE: Home Remedies for Acne

If it is a lot of little pimples, wash with dial anti-bacterial soap. It will kill the bacteria on your face, and will help clear up the little ones. I use a salicylic acid toner, you may have to experiment to see what strength you can use.

I use 2%, but my daughter can only use 1% or it will dry out her skin too much. If you do get larger ones, toothpaste works really well (white, not gel). If they open up, dab them with hydrogen peroxide. They bubble up and look worse for a little while, but then they dry out. This dries out your skin around it, so be careful. Good luck!

PS After 30 years of acne, the only thing that really helped me was going on birth control pills - I don't know if this is a possibility for you, but it really worked for me. (10/17/2008)

alcohol/toothpaste/mary-kay velocity/avocado mask

Clean your face with alcohol using a cotton ball. You will notice that after you clean it the cotton ball is dirty. It burns the pimples toothpaste may also help but only place on the affected area because it can get irritated.

Mary-kay velocity facial cleanser cleans your face leaving it soft and fresh u may also use Mary-kay velocity moisturizer it is for blemishes and disappears your imperfections fast =] I almost forgot u can place avocado on your face and gently massage in a circular motion it really works trust me your face may start to feel a tingly sensation but don't worry. Does anyone have any home remedies to clear up blemishes. I have suffered from acne for 14 years now and I have been to a dermatologist but nothing has worked. Can anyone help?

Answers:

Toothpaste

At bedtime, dab toothpaste on each blemish. It sometimes stings a little, but when I wake up, the acne is noticeably smaller. I use white paste - I don't know if the gel variety works as well. (11/15/2005)

By Karin Lemley

Honey Remedy for Skin Blemishes

Cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a Band-Aid over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight. I personally have never tried this but it's simple and worth a try. (11/15/2005)

By Connie A.

Tree Tea Oil

Tree Tea oil is great for acne, it also kills bacteria, but it smells horrible. You can buy it at Walmart cheap. A small bottle and a little goes a long ways. (11/15/2005)

By Dawn

Maalox

I am older than a teen but I still get them sometimes. Best Tip: buy Maalox or any cheap brand antacid. After you wash your face; SHAKE BOTTLE then put the antacid on your face it is runny. It will dry stiff and then rinse off, you will see results quickly. It does not strip the skin and my skin looks good and feels great. (11/15/2005)

My Ideas

I have heard that if you take the yolk of an egg and put on your face until dry it really helps. I don't know how often you can do it, probably a few times a week.

Myself, I have suffered with acne since a teen, now in my late 40's. What I have found that works is this: I use Nuetrogena pore refining cleanser each morning and then use clean & clear deep cleaning astringent once or twice a day. It has salicylic acid in it and it actually prevents the acne you will be getting in the future. I buy the orangeish one, it is 2% salicylic, the blue one is weaker, I believe it only has 1/2% of it. You will need to experiment and see how often you can use it without drying out your face too much. This stuff lasts a long time so there is not too much expense. Good luck, hope the egg or this helps. (11/16/2005)

Tea Tree Oil

Milk of Magnesia

Back in the 1960's our family doctor suggested I wash my face with tepid water only and after drying it I was to apply shaken "Milk of Magnesia" to my face. let it dry and then go to sleep. It would dry to a white chalk on my face. While sleeping my skin would absorb all of "it" so by morning very little of it would be left for me to rinse off. I am now in my 50's and blemish free (also acne scar free!) I tell all the teen age grand children about it AS IT REALLY WORKS! They now are doing the same thing and with very good results! It is not expensive to take care of a bad or not so bad acne! Try it you will be so impressed AND then pass the word on! (11/16/2005)

By Paula Jo Carr

Maalox

Paula Jo Carr, Thank you so much for your advice with the Maalox I actually got some tonight to try it out because someone else had told me about it but they said to let it dry then wash it right off but I think it would be more effective to let it dry all night. Thanks again and wish me luck! (11/16/2005)

Peroxide and Toothpaste

I don't know how bad your acne is, but this is what I do, but my acne is nothing really, just a few here and there once or twice a month, but they are HUGE! I use peroxide or cheap white mint toothpaste or baking soda. Peroxide: just use cotton ball and cleanse the effected area. Toothpaste: put a dab on the effected area and let dry, wash off with warm water. Baking soda: make a paste and apply, let dry, wash off with warm water. All 3 will dry out the oils in the pimple. I hope this helps. (12/05/2005)

Apple Cider Vinegar

I was told to use apple cider vinegar with a cotton ball and put on your acne. It does sting a little but my acne seems to be going away and I've been using it for a week now. (12/06/2005)

By smathis

Olive Oil

You might also want to switch your regular cooking oil to pure olive oil. My husband and I found we had breakouts and skin irritations every time we used regular hydrogenated vegetable oil. I'm not sure why. The olive oil is a bit more expensive but you can get it from Spanish stores cheaply. I also have this recipe which I use for a moisturizer for my skin which my grandma swore by for good skin if it's a bit oily or gets acne. 2 teaspoons of pure safflower oil, 5 drops clary sage essential oil, 5 drops bergamot oil. Mix all the oils together and store in a little perfume bottle. Rub two or three drops over your skin when it's wet after cleansing. (02/23/2006)

By Miriam76

Honey and Salt

Mix together honey and plain table sugar. Put on blemishes overnight and they will be flat by morning. Also, make a mask of pure honey once a day to prevent other blemishes from forming. (04/20/2006)

By Aa

Random Ideas

I've done some research because I have this terrible zit on my chin that is ballooning up and looking absolutely disgusting! Last night I put toothpaste on (not the gel kind) and I woke up and washed it off and it's still there but I guess kind of smaller. Plus now the white part is showing, which leads me to my next experiment with the egg white. I think its supposed to suck out the "nasty stuff" which I'm assuming is the white part of my ugly pimple. The egg white is rich in Vitamin A which is good for your skin. Also, before you get rid of that yolk, you can use the yolk to make a mask. Beat it and then apply it with a cotton ball, leave on for fifteen minutes. The protein and fatty acids replenishes your skin.

Milk of Magnesia I hear works well in drying out your acne but not your face. Hope some of those random facts helped! (01/21/2007)
