How do you get mold or mildew off ceramic items that aren't glazed without taking the paint off?

What kind of paint is it - acrylic? If so, I would wash them with a soapy solution, and maybe a dip in bleach water. Mildew sometimes stains the actual paint, and so if this has happened, you may be stuck with it.
