Softening Needlepoint Canvas?

This is for all my needlepoint friends in ThriftyFun land. I am almost finished doing a beautiful needlepoint pillow cover. I had a little problem because the canvas is very stiff. Now that it is almost completed, does anyone know how I can soften this canvas? I cannot even imagine this being the cover on a pillow because it would very uncomfortable. Otherwise I guess I will have to frame it.

Hopefully someone can explain to me how I can soften this canvas up.
