Use Hairspray as a Fixative for Chalk Drawings

Bronze Tip Medal for All Time! 86 Tips

I go around my drawings after finishing using colored chalk to match the colors in my drawing. To keep this beautiful effect from coming off spray it with hair spray. I usually do two light coats. You won't believe how the color of the chalk gets brighter and has a satin sheen. The chalk will not come off. Use the cheapest hairspray. Actually works better.

I was warned not to do this by a tutor, because hairspray makes the drawings deteriorate - but I have drawings from 1975 sprayed with hairspray, and they have not deteriorated yet. A fellow student invented a way of layering chalk or pastel with hairspray to get different effects. Have fun.

Back in the days before color :) I used to use hair spray to fix charcoal drawings in my art classes. It was generally Aqua Net, affordably priced for the college student. It worked great.
