Child's Felt Book - coverRecently when my grandson (6 years old) came for the day he wanted to make his mom a book. This is what we came up with using supplies and two felt Christmas tree treat holders, click here for that project Felt Christmas Tree Treat Holders. This is an example of what you can make with things you already have and some imagination. Enjoy!

Total Time: varies, we worked on it for several hours

Supplies:

  • pins
  • scissors
  • sewing machine
  • 2 felt treat holders
  • 4 sheets of felt and felt scraps in various colors
  • iron on white fur craft fabric
  • rick rack, various colors
  • embroidery floss and needle, various colors
  • pencil
  • left over yo yos
  • small craft bells
  • poinsettia buttons
  • 2 small computer circuit cards
  • 2 wooden craft spools

Steps:

  1. We stacked the felt and pinned it together.

  3. Find the middle, run a basting stitch from top to bottom of the felt and stitch them together to make the book.
  4. Child's Felt Book - finding the center

  5. Start laying out your pages.
  6. The cover has one of the treat holders attached. I used embroidery floss and French knots to tack it in place.

  8. The first blue page has a pencil holder cut from the iron on white craft fur that was backstitched on again using embroidery floss. Then we chose yo yos in different colors and sizes and sewed them on with a small bell in the center.

  10. The tan page has a square of the craft fur with a Mac logo drawn on the back side by the young crafter. It was a compromise to making a power supply. It was backstitched in place. Bells were sewn on to two of the power supply corners. Then the two small circuit boards were sewn on to complete this theme.

  12. Yellow felt stars and red poinsettia buttons came together to create a holiday scene.

  14. The stars are sewn on with floss using an outline stitch. Then the buttons were sewn in place.

  16. Next we cut out felt in the rough shape of a skate board, added rick rack decorations, and spool wheels. We also added a tan piece of felt for the sidewalk using floss and adding a bit of green grass. Not pictured is the length of rickrack that is sewn to the front end of the board and to the top of the page to keep it inside the book, more or less :). There is some family consensus that the board actually looks like a hotdog, your choice.

  18. The final inside page has the second treat tree. There were also supposed to be tiny gingerbread cookie buttons and stars, but our young artist was done. Maybe later.
