How do I get rid of the fleas?

Flea season is here and our yard is infested! That's not the worst part, our house is infested as well. The problem is, there's not a single rug in the entire house. We have hardwood floors. How do I get rid of the fleas? Yes, we have a cat. I've tried flea collars, flea spray, flea shampoo, you name it, but we can't get rid of them. I vacuum several times a day (emptying the bag every time) and mop daily as well. Please help! I refuse to use bombs or sprays. I prefer to use Borax or something like that. Any suggestions?

I know you said you refused to use bombs or sprays so I hope I'm not just wasting my time with this, but here goes. You need to call a professional exterminator. You will never get rid of your infestation if you don't. Also, have your pets dipped for the fleas at your vet and then treat them monthly with Advantage or Frontline. I know this all costs money, but you will never take care of the problem if you don't do this. Also, all the other remedies will, over time, cost more than all this will without any results. Good luck! (05/31/2007)

Have you tried Frontline Plus? It's a very good product, a little expensive but worth it. Fleas can really make your pet sick and can also make them so sick they can die. Once you get the fleas on your pet and in your house under control you can drop down to using it once every three months, but at first maybe the first 6 months I would use it once a month.

Here where I am at, you can get it at an animal feed or pet store (cheaper than a vet's office). A three months supply here runs about 40 dollars. God Bless and good luck. (05/31/2007)

Try Advantage, or other products like it for your pet. Your vet should have it in stock. Do not use borax in a house that has small animals or children. It is poisonous to them, too. As for the rest of the house, I'm afraid you need an exterminator. My husband, a civil engineer, once came home with his chinos covered from ankle to knee in fleas. Our cats caught them from him! The exterminator was the only thing that worked. Good luck. (05/31/2007)

How do I get rid of the fleas?

When I adopted one of my cats from the shelter she had fleas. Two treatments of Advantix or Frontline did the trick (I don't remember which one it was, but it worked).

Editor's Note: Advantix is only for dogs, DON'T use on cats. Advantage can be used on cats as can Frontline. (05/31/2007)

Type in natural flea remedies for an online search. This will give you an eye-opening view of the vast problems of flea infestation. Your yard can be treated with the products recommended and your animals and house too, or go the route of other posters. All can be good, but it can take many weeks to remedy. I know, I'm in the middle of it now. Good Luck. (05/31/2007)

Go to the site Diatect.com and get the flea product. You will love this. Your cat will have to have Frontline Plus. This is the ONLY thing that will work - believe me I have been there, I know. The powder at Diatect will treat your house and yard and it is safe. You'll love it. Good luck. Remember, only Frontline Plus works on the cat not Frontline.

How do I get rid of the fleas?

I read, I think on Thrifty Fun, ivory soap kills fleas. I have been using it when I groom my dog, however we also use revolution monthly. The article said you dilute 1-3 ivory/water, you can also spray your yard and it kills fleas. I do however think you must use something like revolution to stay in control. Good luck. (06/01/2007)

Read the section on this website titled: Borax vs Salt (for getting rid of fleas). Lots of info there.

You can use Borax to mop your hardwood floors. My daughter said it worked to stop a flea infestation after her friend's cat left. Be careful not to get Borax on your skin or breathe it. Look up Borax on Wikipedia for precautions. She used a Swiffer to clean up her hardwood floors after the Borax solution had dried and saw that it had worked!

Lots of Borax and a little salt worked on my carpets when a $100s worth of pesticides and foggers didn't! Worked over-night. Never saw a flea again, 3 yrs since. Hope this helps, I know how traumatic it was for our family. Don't use Borax on pets or allow children to walk barefoot or crawl on Borax, it can be toxic if absorbed through the skin and damage kidneys according to Wikipedia. (08/13/2007)

How do I get rid of the fleas?

I have 3 cats that never go out of the house, but it seems like we get fleas every season anyway. I was using Frontline Plus regularly and we still had the fleas. So, I asked my vet and he said sometimes the fleas can be immune to it if used regularly so he switched me onto Revolution and it worked 100%. However, I had to spray a can of I think it was called PROTOCOL-(an aerosol can of flea killer stocked by my veterinarian that has a black, white, and red can)-all over the carpets, furniture, and anywhere my cats slept.

Also, the vet said that fleas like to live in cracks, and under furniture so be sure you remove cushions and vacuum under everything. Good Luck! (09/05/2007)

How do I get rid of the fleas?

We've moved to various parts of the country and have acquired houses with fleas on separate occasions. We tried everything and nothing seemed to work. Then we got this simple tip and never had another flea. Sprinkle table salt around the inside of the house, on rugs, carpets, wood floors, furniture, tile, etc. Let it rest for a day then vacuum it up. It dehydrates the fleas and they die. The residue of the salt you don't get up with the first vacuuming takes care of the rest of the fleas that survive the original dose. Trust me; it worked in Hawaii, the Midwest, Texas, California, Brazil; all known for flea infestations. Did I mention we had two cats and a dog? One dose and it was lights out for the fleas, the balance of the time we lived in those locations (up to four years or more). (06/23/2009)
