Wizard of Oz Birthday Party Ideas?

September 14, 2012

A little girl in a Dorothy costume from Wizard of Oz.My daughter wants to have a Wizard of Oz birthday party. It will be her fourth birthday. She loves both the book and the movie, so decorations can be based on either. We have her parties in our backyard on our deck in the summer. I'm looking for decoration ideas that are fairly easy to make. I usually make cupcakes and chocolate lollipops. If you have any ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

Of course u need a yellow brick road, made from shiny gold paper. Faux emeralds scattered on the cake table, large lollypops(like the Lollypop kids) in a bunch tied with a ribbon slipped into some felt pointy toed shoes with red and white striped socks like the Wicked witch wore. You may have to weight these with sand so they will stand up after the lollies are bunched in them. Perhaps everyone could wear green like the folks in Emerald City.

I have used this for an event 6 or 7 years ago.
I purchased enough blue gingham (small woven checks) to cut a nice square (or a runner for a long banquet table) to anchor the theme. (That's where the salt & pepper and sugar dish and water pitcher also were to be placed), and were centered over the plain white table cloths we always used.

I purchased clear or white "glass-slppers" from the bridal dept of the craft store inexpensively, and several pair of high-heels from the thrift stores for a couple of dollars. I spray painted the shoes red, having turned the craft store ones upside down and painted just the underside and the "outside" of the shoe. When dry, I put irredescent shreds (used for gift bags or easter grass) in the high-heels, and filled the craft store shoes with trail mix or miniature M&M's. This went over really well. We had thought about painting wood blocks or bricks gold, or wrapping them in gold paper-- but ran out of time.

We also had thought of getting small 3" baskets for the nut-cups and covering them with a square of the gingham too (didn't Dorothy carry Toto in one?). The little ruby slipper "nut-cups" were winners though, and were what everybody talked about.

You might keep the spray-painted high-heels and nut-cups as an idea for a girlie-girl event too (add candy necklaces).
This reminds me of a fun event... Go for it!
