In Memory of Big Grunt (German Shepherd)

Big Grunt (Grosses Grunzen) was a 3 year old German Shepherd. We bought him from a friend when he was 10 months old.

He loved to play ball and chase fireflies. Our Grunty died July 31, 2006 he was much too young to die. We miss him so much that it hurts. It hurts bad.

I too just recently lost our Bulldog Lady, on May 5th 2006.
In December she would have been six. I still look for her and I hear her sometimes. God Bless you at this time. It will get easier days ahead but know others share your loss and know how much your baby meant to your family. Our Lady was not just a dog...she was family just as your Big Grunt was to yours.

I'm making a memory collage now. It takes time but you will want to see him in pictures soon. Once I do get it together I will post it. I hope it might help you as you miss your Grunt! The joy from a family dog is irreplaceable indeed.

dear Curt
May God Bless you and make the memories of your precious dog last a lifetime for you.I know what you're feeling because I had to give up one of our sweet dogs at the age of 20 yrs and 2 months.he was a beautiful white German shepherd pit mix and we named him Snow.he was a gentle dog and loved the grandkids..we had a very special dog named Smarty.a black Lab that lived with us for 7 years and had Diabetes from the day he was born I think.he wasn't weaned when someone dumped him at a friends nursery and I couldn't see him die from lack of love and care so,we took him and hand fed him until he was old enough to eat and at about three months we found out he had diabetes.he'd come and stand still for his shots which we gave him in the skin around the neck so it didn't hurt him.he didn't mind and knew it made him feel better.we also had a brindle Pit Shepherd mix that died from cancer at 12 years old so my heart goes out to you Curt.there's always another little homeless dog out there that needs your love also so don't turn away from them.give them a life and love too.

I'm so sorry to read about you losing your "boy". I know it hurts. I lost my14 year-old female GSD to cancer a while back and can't talk about it without choking up. She was my wonderful companion. She was also a certified therapy dog who was in my classroom everyday for years. She had her own school ID and was in the yearbook. What happened to your "Big Grunt"?

Please check out the "Rainbow Bridge" on line about grieving for a beloved dog. And don't be shy about expressing your grief. He was a member of the family. A beautifully illustrated, wonderful children's book about losing a dog is called "Dog Heaven" by Cynthia Rylant. I wouldn't be without it and have given many copies over the years. I found it a great comfort.

I, and obviously many others, feel the pain you are going through. I had to put one of my dogs down in January and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. But, like they say, "it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." Love them as much as you can for as long as you can and they will grace your life, as mine have.

We have a Shepard/Lab mix named Starbaby. She is only 8years old and we either have to find her a new home or have her put down. Our neighbor across the street moved in 2 years ago and has called the police on her numerous times. She got out of the yard when he was walking his dog. Our Star approached the man and his dog and he started yelling and screaming at her. He kicked her in her head. Now whenever she sees this neighbor she goes crazy. This summer the kids left the gate open and she got out.

He came running out of his house yelling and waving his arms around. Star nipped him on his hand and now she is considered a vicious dog. We have another dog and 5 cats, she gets along with all of them fine. We also have a pool in our yard and the neighborhood kids are in and out all the time without any trouble. We live in the southwest Chicago suburbs. If anyone knows of anyone with a large yard preferably out of the city or near suburbs willing to take a wonderful dog please help us.

My boys name was Rex. I watched him be born when i was in 7th grade and I picked him out of the litter for myself. He was the greatest dog in the world (that is what we all think of our own, but we know that every one's dog is the best). Being a shepherd, as he got older, he began to suffer from hip problems and a year and a half ago we had to put him down.

He was 13 or 14. My family and I may have had more time with our big baby, but I still cry for him whenever I hear our neighbor's shepherd is barking and playing in their yard. Shepherds are amazing and wonderful friends, for all of the Grunts and Rexs out there don't ever forget your best friend when they have gone over the rainbow.

Barney was our family german shepherd we got as a puppy smart bright and full of love. He died when
I was 18 he was 14 and his memory has never left.
I am sorry for your loss and understand the pain.
When my baby girl Allie Mae (tortishell cat with attitude she tried to attack mailman once) had to cross over I could think of another pet. 10 months later we rescued a jack russell terrier 1 yr old that
had been left in a kennel for 10-14 days with no food or water she was wild for a few days then she
mellowed she is our couch potatoe lap warmer.
I still to this day think God and Allie sent Cookie our
Jack to us. She is our little girl and we were given
a yorkie pup who they are insepreable now. I hope
when you are ready you will be able to take another
friend in as you have a great heart. I wish you healing and let us know how you are.

My shepherd/husky mix Zeke died at 14 yrs in 1984. We adopted him at 6 weeks from the Oakland SPCA. It took a year to cure him of mange. He was so bright it was sometimes scary. he taught himself to climb ladders, turn doornobs, and was an awesome fetcher of tennis balls. He would carry tree limbs and tires around if he could get them. He loved the cold and insisted on personally and gently removing the winter hats of anyone who entered the house. He was beautiful, lovable and protective, lived with us until he was too sick to carry on without suffering. I think about him every single day.

Your 'Boy' was sooo handsome, what a kind big face! I too had a big handsome Boy who died overnight at home. He was only seven and we had rescued him when he was five, seemed like we had had him all our lifes he just fitted in so well with the family and loved us so much for giving him a second chance. He was long haired and very proud of his beautiful coat avoiding puddles and mud at all costs! His passing over was very unexpected and he suffered a painful death of twisted gut, something I will never get over even after 4 years. I know he is with me when I now walk our 2 year old long haired black and tan 'girl' Jura. You will never forget Big Grunt just like we will never forget Troy but the memories are all happy ones!

Poor little guy, I am so sorry for you to lose such a faithful and loving friend. My husky/shepard is 13 now and I know the day is coming where I will have to make that horrible decision. Not yet, though. You will never forget your friend, and though his life was cut too short, try to be happy for the time you did have with him.

Thank you to all who have posted here. It has to be extra tough to lose your fur baby at such a young age as 3. I found this page while looking for some solace today. I lost my 16 &1/2 year old shepherd this afternoon. Tilly (nickname Nilts) was a rescue pup from the humane society that we had from 8 weeks old until her passing today. She was extra special as all Sheppys are.

Unbeknownst to us, she had parvo when we adopted her at the humane society. She came down with it the day after we got her. . They said we could bring her back, but she had already stolen our hearts so after many prayers and about $500.00 in vet bills, she survived. 16 years is old for a shepherd so we feel like she was a miracle dog. She loved to play ball, and would even pick an apple off the tree to use as a ball if one wasn't handy. She was the most gentle and loving dog and I truly feel she would have given her life to protect us.

She had been fighting the hip dysplasia the last year and yesterday was unable to walk and lost bowel control. Her appetite was bad, and I know she was in terrible pain. With heavy hearts we knew it was time to have her put down. We discussed it last evening and I swear she was listening to the conversation! She decided to go out her own way and quietly passed on in her sleep while soaking up the sun on this beautiful day. All Dogs Go To Heaven--rest well my beloved "puppy girl".

Sorry to hear about Big Grunt. I think the most difficult thing about losing a German Shepherd is missing their companionship and intelligence. We rescued our "son" Rufus from the local dog shelter when he was about 10 weeks old. After eight plus years of having him teach us everything we were capable of learning, he had to go to the Bridge. He was the warmest, gentlest creature I have ever met.
He had a vocabulary of 150 plus words many of which were toys, personal friends or travel destinations. We had to spell out destinations because he would get too excited if we said the word RIDE"! It was only a few days until we had to resort to sign language because he learned what the spelling meant. He loved his frisbees and actually won several Hyperflite contests locally. I miss Rufus as much today as I did the day we had to take him to Cornell Vet School on his last day. He left paw prints on the hearts of his many friends! Needless to say, Rufus and Big Grunt live on in our hearts and minds!

I'm so sorry for your loss. I know how bad it hurts. I rescued a German Shepherd puppy, from a inhumane neighbor, 14 yrs. ago. His dogs resorted to eating the pups due to starvation. I named this girl "Willimena", "Willy" for short. She was the perfect dog. I'm a trainer and trained her and she did it all. She even calmed the dogs I trained. Most of all she was my baby and I have 2 kids. My husband became a dog lover because of Willy. She was everything to all of us.

Willy got cancer last yr. and my kids and husband begged me to wait to have her put to sleep. I put it off for a month. She began to just lay around and not want to go outside. I knew I didn't want her to suffer, so I scheduled it for October 30th. My husband's birthday was Oct. 28th. Willy knew he wanted her with him on his birthday. On his birthday she got up and ran around the house like she was a pup, like nothing was wrong. Willy I think did that to give my husband a happy birthday. She actually waited until 3:00 a.m., on the 29th, after my kids and husband went to sleep, to die. She came to me so weak, I got on the floor and she laid down on my lap and I told her that I loved her and if she wanted to go, it was ok. A minute later she passed in my arms. It hurt me so terribly but, I needed her to know it was ok.

Losing her was the worst thing for me and my family. A month before she passed I knew it was going to be hard and wanted to get another German Shepherd pup so Willy could teach it what she knew. Dogs do that. My family thought I was terrible wanting another dog before she died. I got the pup anyway. Willy in that 1 month taught that dog everything she did. He's not Willy but, he reminds us of her with all he does. You never forget the ones you love and the ones you love never forget you. I've had over 50 dogs in my life and none were as special as Willy. Having Matt our pup helped get through our grief. We had a companion dog with Willy, a Shih Tsu and I felt he would need another friend as well. Willy was cremated and she sits on our mantle with a picture of her smiling. That helps us also. I happen to feel that Willy always wanted us happy and her spirit is with us in Matt and she wanted it that way.

When we think of Willy and begin to cry we say out loud "Thank-you girl for all you've given us." and I feel she hears it and she is happy in Heaven, knowing she still is making us happy. What makes dogs so very special is that they only want to make us happy and love us, no matter what. What she taught Matt reminds us so much of her and keeps her memory fresh, like she is here all the time. I tell people who have lost their dogs to get another dog immediately and teach their dog just like they taught the one they lost. It really helps the grieving process after losing a dog they loved so much. No two dogs are the same but, having a dog that acts like the dog you've lost really can help. I hope you get another dog and you'll see how fast the hurt will pass and see how memories can go on forever. I hope this helps you. Big Grunt was a beautiful boy and I bet he'd want you to be happy.

Tell him Thanks for all he gave you and see how good you feel doing it. I'm not crazy, but I know that Willy wants us happy and I don't want her unhappy worrying about us.
