Great idea, doable for everyone but the least "handy" of us. I was reading an old Reader's Digest (April 2010) that used the phrase "upcycling" for exactly this kind of reuse. Things like you've described save hundreds of tons of things that would otherwise go in the garbage from landfills. Thumbs up!
