Pruning Potentillas

I have Potentillas growing up both sides of my laneway and I would like to know, if you can prune Potentillas.

I would like to prune them into a square hedge shape. When is the best time to prune, will they still flower after pruning?

Must you cut them into shapes? Not attractive or natural, and the regrowth looks deformed, like someone growing out a perm. Maybe it's time to move them to a place where they can grow to their proper size instead and then plant a new plant that is naturally smaller without the flat-top haircut. Just a thought.

Yes, you really should trim your bushes back to about one foot high. They come back beautifully next year. i have done this for years. Happy trimming.
