Homemade "Grape Nuts"
- 3 cups whole wheat flour
- 1/2 cup wheat germ
- 1 cup brown sugar or 3/4 cup corn syrup
- 2 cup buttermilk or sour milk
- 1 tsp. soda
- pinch salt
Combine all the ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat until smooth. Spread dough on 2 large cookie sheets. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes. Crumble by breaking into chunks while still warm and then grating or briefly chopping in the blender or food processor one cupful at a time. Crisp in the oven at 250 degrees F for 20-30 minutes. Store in an airtight container. Makes about 2 1/2 pounds.
