RE: Flying Bugs in My House
Hi, my husband and I own and operate a Exterminating company here in New Orleans, Louisiana. It sounds like you are describing a moth or a fruit fly. If you can possibly take a picture of the bug, feel free to email it to us and I will have my husband look at it for you and he can solve your bug problem. You can send the pic to bannonsext AT ymail.com or if you can not send a pic...please write to us and give us a little more detail about the bug. The best way to solve the problem, is to FIRST identify the pest that you are dealing with...Sincerely.....Shelly and Steve with Bannons Exterminating Company =)

RE: Flying Bugs in My House
We had a problem with these and it was a nightmare, it took so long to get rid of them. You must be vigilent, even after removing their original food source. They lay eggs anyplace, even in matchbooks between the matches; they can crawl under the rims of still sealed jars, and even between the plastic trash bags that were still in the roll. I now check everything I bring into my home--I open each and every box, encasing the contents in a ziplock bag, and then I seal the entire box with my food saver. I figure I'm going to keep the moths out of my good food, and if the food is already contaminated (and I didn't see it), I'm going to seal the moths in, to keep them from contaminating other food. I've never had this problem before, and the more people I talk to, the more common it is becoming.

RE: Flying Bugs in My House
I had a terrible time with this same problem. You have to interrupt the life cycle of the moth. They will bed up and lay eggs in anything - including binding of books, etc.
I understand they generally thrive in dog food and/or bird seed. I discovered bird seed was how my problem started.I got rid of them by removing and discarding any food they had infiltrated and - important - hung stickly fly traps in the rooms involved. This trapped them where they could not lay their eggs and then hatch into moths. The fly trap was a more economical way than purchasing expensive sticky pantry moth traps.
It was a long process - but successful. (I also sprayed inside my cabinets with insect repellent as I cleaned out the food - empty cabinets of course.) I wish you complete success!

I don't know about all of you, but my mom used to put a Basil leaf in her bag of flour or any other dry meal and etc. I do the same thing, because she told me that I wouldn't get bugs in my things. It must work as I am 70 yrs. old and have done this ever since she told me this and I haven't seen any bugs ever develop anywhere. But, everything that has dry product. A Basil leaf goes in there right away.

RE: Flying Bugs in My House
Sounds like pantry moths to me you will need to check all your dry ingredients in your fod cupbard I had thembad once and even found them in abag of salt I had from bulk store. I find when I open a container of like cornmeal it looks a little like cobwebs then I know that is what it is and throw it out. You can buy pantry moth traps and I have had good luck with them.

I had some in my house and couldn't figure out where they came from. They were coming from old flour that I had not used up fast enough or else they were in there when I bought it. Two things: bay leaves in the flour, flour products or meal that you want to keep on a shelf and not refrigerated. The other thing: I used moth balls and end of moths. Most all bugs I've encountered don't like moth balls. I use them. Some people don't care for them. You can google them and see if the objections bother you. I've used them over the years with no problem. I don't saturate my house with them. Oh termites do fly.

Those bugs are roaches. In the south they are common. Get the roach hotelor something similar and place them where there are small openings where these little critters can get in. Good luck. Let me know how it works.

Call the same pest company back that came out before, and ask if the 'moths' they saw back then are normally around in winter. At least it might be a free idea.

RE: Flying Bugs in My House
They are probably Indian Meal Moths. They will be living in food products so the time of year it is doesn't matter. They can be found in any product made from plants so look for something that has been around a while;cereals, meal, spices, and dog biscuits. Look for something that has been around for awhile and you will see webbing in what they are feeding on.
There is no need to spend money on an exterminator for them, just a thorough cleaning and removing the food source. Open up the unopened boxes of stuff not so much that they are in the food but the caterpillars will get under the box flaps and turn into the moths so you feel good about getting rid of them then two weeks later a new crop shows up.

I think stored product pests ( weevils) is on the right track. Probably a grain moth. I used to live in Reisterstown and don't remember any other bug that fits the description. Until you get rid of the source you won't solve the problem. Here is a link with a bunch of descriptions and pics. Also step by step to treat them. http://pestcemetery.com/?p=74 I'd be interested to hear if it helps. Good Luck

RE: Flying Bugs in My House
If it started in the kitchen, they could be weevils. I never knew weevils could fly until I had them in my house in Florida. Check your pantry; flour, pasta, any package mixes with powdery seasonings; mac&cheese etc. You might have to get rid of a lot of stuff (I filled up a trash bag) but removing the source is the key. Then vacuum and clean the shelves. You probably brought them home from the supermarket in a bag of flour or box of pasta etc. My exterminator told me the problem can be averted by putting susceptible foods (flour, rice etc.) in the freezer for 2-3 days before storing it in the cupboards. The good news is, once I got rid of them and cleaned out, I never got them again.
