Cleaning Rust Off Cast Iron Wood Stove

I have a cast iron woodstove (Vermont castings) and I had a leaky roof that dripped water onto the top of the stove. How do I clean the rust off without damaging the black cast iron?

Take ordinary bacon grease on a newspaper and wipe the rust off. We do this yearly to clean up our wood stove and to make it shiny.
