Be aware of your surroundings when opening your garage door (or any other door). Wait till passersby are past your home before opening your garage or getting out of your car, to go inside your home. Stay in your car for safety purposes. If need be, you can always leave in your car and come back later. Better to be safe than sorry.

how sad that we need to be aware of when we open our doors! What does this say about out communities? Not much!

This is excellent advice. Recently 2 casino winners in the Milwaukee area were followed home and robbed of their winnings in their own garages. One of the thieves has been apprehended, the other one not yet. It pays to be careful and have a buddy when possible.
