Request: Remedies for Hives
Archived on 12/06/2009
Does anyone have a recipe or know how to make a skin cream (or anything else) that would help with hives? I have very sensitive skin and can't use most soaps, lotions, etc. that have any scents or dyes in them. I use hypoallergenic everything, including dish soap and laundry soap, and even then, I wear rubber gloves when I'm cleaning, but I still get hives and rashes. I've been putting a lot of cortisone cream on, but I know all that steroid can't be good for my skin. Does anyone know of a more natural solution?

Try igotgoop.com and request cream without any added fragrance. My friend has hives and she claims its the only cream ever to have worked. (11/20/2008)

I have the same problem and I've tried all the creams and such. What I'm using now is olive oil. I use it all over including my face and I love it. It doesn't matter what kind.
Good luck.

I have an old fashioned recipe for skin problems. this works great for poison ivy on to psoriasis. Find a straight willow tree, cut bark off, about 3 pounds, put in a pot and cover with water. Boil for about 30 minutes, then let simmer for about 1 1/2 hours until you get really dark solution. Let stand until cool then strain the bark away.
Rub this solution onto trouble spots 3 or 4 times a day. You may want to use some gloves as your skin on your hands may get stained. It may give other areas a tanned look, but washes away. Do not use if you have an allergy to aspirin. For the remainder of solution, put in snack bags or plastic bottles and freeze. We keep this stuff in the freezer ready to go because we get poison ivy a lot around here. It can be kept in refrigerator for a couple of months. The straight willow usually grows in ditches or on lake banks. It looks like the weeping willow without the long weeping branches. Good luck. (11/20/2008)

I too have ultra sensitive skin. I have to watch the ingredients in products I use. I am allergic to the preservative methylparaben. You will notice it is in almost everything. I think for people like us, less is more. (Actually it's best for everyone, but they just don't know it.l) Try not to use moisturizers, etc., because I think you will find they only make your skin worse.
I find I am able to use Vaseline on my hands at night to moisturize them. Also, cornstarch in bathwater is great for hives or itching if you ever get that. But watch water. Usually water makes skin conditions worse. So try to keep your hands out of water. (Also, you will notice it is an ingredient in lots of products, sigh.) Cornstarch can also be used as dusting powder.
Find a shampoo you are able to use and don't use conditioner on your hair. It may make your scalp itch. I use very little hair product. I like Mousse, but try not to get it on my skin.
A pediatrician once told me to rinse, rinse, rinse. I think you'll find that if you rinse your hands well after washing and then really dry them well, it helps. I've also been known to rinse clothing in the washer twice. Now, I add vinegar to the rinse water and only do it once. I do not use fabric softener. People like us need to get back to basics. Broken out, itchy skin isn't sexy. I must tell you that cortizone cream makes my skin itch worse. I do better with a gel product. I'm not sure why. I have a prescription. Remember everyone's body is different and what works for one person may not work for you. (11/23/2008)

Kim, use Crisco shortening. Trust me it is very soothing, has safflower oil, soybean oil, and cotton seed oil. Try it. It's also great for eczema. (02/13/2009)

I too suffer from hives, no allergies to foods or anything else for that matter. After being on just about every antihistamine out there, which didn't help in the least, I started taking Xyzal, another antihistamine and after a month or so on that little pill, no more hives. I could eat any trigger and I was fine. After several months on it I thought I was cured and stopped taking it. A big no no. So now I'm back to getting them every day, all over. I started the Xyzal again, 3 weeks now and as of today was the first day I didn't wake up to a new set. I'm also taking Clarinex which is know to treat hives. Hope this helps someone. (02/27/2009)

I am looking for home remedies for hives. I live in Michigan and it is very cold. I recently found out I am allergic to the cold, I do not want to move and the pills for it make me very tired. Can anyone help?

Hi Pseres!
I don't get hives, but I do have eczema on the top of my hands that's triggered mostly by the cold air....especially when it gets under 25 degrees. It stings when moisturized, it itches like dry skin, and it can be unsightly...noticeable red patches. What has worked really well for me is lathering up with an eczema cream before bedtime combined with Oil of Olay "Quench" moisturizer. My eczema cream is prescription only but is called Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream USP, 0.1%. I don't know if this helps or not, but if you haven't tried it yet, it might help at least a little. My daughter gets really bad hives from nerves. I have found that sometimes using a cool bath/compress sometimes works for her. At times I have used a baking soda paste made with baking soda and cool water and this works for her as well. I know the antihistamines can make you drowsy so I have given them to her at night only and used the other things during the day.
Good luck. I know how miserable my daughter is from her nerve induced hives and can't even imagine what you are suffering from hives caused by the cold, especially considering where you live.

I get hives on a very regular basis from my high blood pressure meds. I have found aloe vera gel (usually the blue one) works to help relieve the itching. Apply 4-5 times a day, and you will notice the hive clearing up from the center out. (03/02/2006)

RE: Remedies for Hives
I had a case of the hives for 3 years and 3 months. They would come on at 6 pm every night. The doctor said they come on for no reason. I use x-creme in a yellow box sold over the counter to get rid of the itch, and also and Zyrtec. They went away for 8 months and now they are back. I go 4 days now until the hives come back. I feel they are from pressure of elastic. Good luck with them. Try the x-creme it really works. You can e-mail me at qpondr AT aol.com (remove spaces). (03/03/2006)

I use Zyrtec, as I have the same problem. To combat the drowsiness, I take the Zyrtec before going to bed and that seems to work out well.

RE: Remedies for Hives
I am in Ontario and I have had problems with the cold weather hives in the past. I would get them on my legs from spending too much time out in the cold working the horses. I did find that dressing warm as a preventative did help, but for the itching and annoyance once I had them the best thing by far was apple cider vinegar compresses! Helped the itching and swelling so much!

I've had them for 3 or 4 years now. The only thing that works is Zyrtec. I've tried it all. You must take 10mg EVERY DAY at the SAME TIME. The trick is to prevent them from even happening.
The good news is that Zyrtec is now sold over the counter, and there is also a generic version.

I have suffered for two years and counting. I have been to the doctor. Zyrtec, no good. Went to the dermatologist, she put me on Doxepin. It helps so much. I don't think there is a so called cure. I also noticed it was worse at night? (02/19/2008)

RE: Remedies for Hives
Hives, or Dermatitis ? Both can cause itching, red blotches, and even little bumps all over. I just went to a dermatologist (I almost thought it was impetigo). It was itching so bad that I would use soap and water and wash them so hard trying to relieve the itching.. OH how wrong I was.
FIRST: I was told to STOP using all antibacterial soaps. Hand, bath and dish. It may cure the bacteria, (actually all soaps are antibacterial, but compare the labels, the only difference is that alcohol is an ingredient, and that is a NO NO) so it dries your skin so bad that it continues the itching even worse.
SECOND: Stay away from topical ointments (things that look like Vaseline).
THIRD: Use a cream based 1% hydro cortisone.
FOURTH: Avoid plastic and cloth fiber bandages. Get nonstick gauze pads and use paper tape only if needed to cover. Try this and see if it eases the itch. And keep moisture on your body. Don't fall for the Bath & Body or fancy types of lotion. They all contain alcohol to make their pretty fragrance.
If at all possible use an unscented milk product for your soaps, lotions, or baths. Real Goat, Cow even Sheep. You can find this all over e-bay pretty cheap.
Just make sure it is made the old process way, not melt & pour. If you look you will see and read the difference.
I call it the winter itches now that I have found out the reason for my condition. I live in Northern Indiana and it has been colder than normal this year, so my symptoms were more profound. Actual hives are a sign of an allergic reaction and should be treated as such. Food, medicine and nerves may cause this. Hives are an actual medical condition and you should seek out a doctor for help. Something is triggering this reaction. Hope this helps.

I have had chronic hives for about 10 years. I have had allergy shots and been on Zyrtec with no results. Tanning beds do help a lot. I haven't found anything else that does it for me though, and I have tried everything. It is so annoying. (06/04/2008)

One thing that almost always works for hives, but is not an immediate cure for the misery, is a pure diet. The best website I've found for this is out of Australia and is foodintol.com I followed their dietary suggestions and got rid of a hives problem that lasted for seven years. Occasionally I'll get hives if I eat the wrong food, but I know which ones to avoid, so unless somebody spikes my food I'm okay. I highly recommend this site. RE: Remedies for Hives
I get chronic hives related to mysterious food allergies. I have tried everything, but so far I have had more luck treating the symptoms than finding the cause. What works: Apple cider vinegar (if applied immediately) will usually flatten it and stop the itch after 10 or so minutes. Zorivax (cold sore cream) will also help clear up the hives, especially bad ones that have wrecked the skin surface by making it dry and flaky.
I actually use both of these things preemptively at hive prone sites, and it seems to reduce the severity. I also take a multivitamin, heavy in B vitamins, which are supposed to reduce the severity of hives. No matter what approach you use (I've tried oatmeal paste, ice, etc) the key seems to be early treatment. If the hive gets up to full size, you can pretty much count on it hanging around forever no matter what you do. (11/03/2008)

RE: Remedies for Hives
Make a paste with 2 cups of oatmeal and 3 tablespoons of cornstarch. Add a little water to make it into a paste. Apply to affected area for 15-30 minutes. It dries the hives up within a couple of hours. It should help. (11/19/2008)

RE: Remedies for Hives
I have had hives for about 2 weeks and they are very irritating. I soaked in Epsom salts; 2 cups to a tub of water and it helped relive the itch. I also like the oatmeal and cornstarch idea too, so I will give it a try. (11/20/2008)
