Homemade Automatic Dish Washing Detergent

So here is the recipe for Automatic dish washing detergent.
  • 1 cup washing soda
  • 1 cup borax
  • 1/2 cup kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup citric acid

Shake thoroughly or stir and store in tightly covered jar. Use one tablespoon per load. For best results add white vinegar to the rinse dispenser.

All of the above items can be found in your local grocery store. This recipe cleans; cuts grease and yet gentle enough for fine china.

Tip: Homemade Automatic Dish Washing Detergent

Mix 3 tablespoons borax and 3 tablespoons baking soda. Fill both containers in automatic dishwasher. This will clean your dishes cheaper and better than any store bought dish detergent.

RE: Homemade Automatic Dish Washing Detergent

My soap container in my dishwasher wouldn't hold 6 tablespoons of anything. Is that 3 tablespoons of borax and 3 tablespoons of baking soda for ONE load? (12/24/2005)

RE: Homemade Automatic Dish Washing Detergent

Baking soda is very abrasive, which is why it is often used as a cleanser and tooth powder. It will etch your glassware over time. It might be a cheap solution in the short run, but having to replace your glasses or have them look cloudy is not worth it in the long run, IMO. (12/28/2005)
