Do solar cell phone chargers work well? I have family in Houston and due to Hurricane Ike, the power has been off for almost a week. If these chargers work, it would be a great help as the telephone land line is not functioning yet. How about a solar fan? Do they make such a thing?

Yes, they do work. I bought my adult son a solar battery charger for Christmas several years back. I also bought him a solar radio that came with a phone charger in, but it wasn't the correct type for his brand of cell phone. I guess all cell phones have different adapters, so find out the brand of cell phone before hand. The C.Crain Company has quite a selection of Solar Chargers & other "survival" type goodies like LED flashlights & such. There's nothing like a great flashlight that's easy on batteries when the power is out. My favorite thing in a power outage is a LED flashlight that fits on your forehead with an elastic band. I found one at my local hardware store & wouldn't be without it in an emergency! There's nothing like having both of your hands free when you're using it!

* Also, RV stores are great places to shop for 12 volt things that run on car or small motorcycle batteries. You can then hook the battery up to a solar trickle-charger, so whenever the sun's out, the battery is being recharged. Just stay away for those wind-up & shake-charged flashlights. At least they didn't work well for me. Maybe they've improved them in the last few years?

Here's one for $49 that plugs into a cigarette lighter & will trickle charge any 12 volt battery:

You can go to Walmart to the auto department and get and invertor and connect to your car battery. Can charge cell phone, run small fans, small lamps, ect.
