RE: Cleaning Leather Furniture
Bonnie, I used to live in the Park Hills area. I went to school with a Bonnie, from Bonne Terre (back in 1960), whom I'm trying to find. I know it's a long shot, but maybe you could e-mail me. noellasue(at)alltel.com

Before you do anything check to see what kind of cleaning code it has. I have a "NAKED" leather set. It is like the leather of a bomber jacket. It has only been dyed but has no sheen or chemical shine to it. These CAN NOT be cleaned with any cleaner. They are supposed to develop a Patina look. If your couch has a shine to it you are probably safe but you should still find out what type of leather it is and what it's cleaning code is. All leathers have cleaning codes.

Lexol, No Bull, and CPR are all good products, but I have had better results with the following products: Color Plus Soffener, Letherique, and Advleather SG-10. (08/09/2007)

RE: Cleaning Leather Furniture
You need to use a good quality water based foam leather cleaner.
DO NOT use anything containing oils, waxes or silicones. (Most 'conditioners' contain waxes or oils so should not be used) and furniture polish (Pledge etc) contains silicones which will destroy the finish on the leather.
BABY WIPES are the worst thing you can use as they will destroy the finish on your leather. They are very strong alkaline cleaners to neutralize urine (acid) on baby's skin so they are not the right thing to use on leather.
Saddle soap is too harsh to use on delicate leathers.
Fairy liquid contains more salt these days to get dishes clean and this will break the finish down on your leather. This has been verified by the manufacturers (as with the baby wipes).
You should also follow cleaning with a good water based leather protector which will act like a 'scotch guard' and inhibit dirt and stains from being absorbed and make cleaning easier the next time.
Dry leather needs re hydrating with water and oils and waxes should not be used as the natural oils do not dry out of leather. Wiping over with a damp cloth regularly will help to do this.
It is important to maintain a regular cleaning regime cleaning dirt off the surface regularly and inhibiting the absorption of body oils into the leather with a protector is the best way of doing this.
The alternative is a brand new product on the market called Lazy Leather. This is the latest technology in cleaning and combines an effective cleaner with a protector. It is quick and easy to use and should be used as a maintenance product once your suite has been cleaned or from new if you have just bought it.
Sadly even the professionals in the business these days are often misinformed.
Leather does NOT lose its natural oils. When hide is turned into leather it does not keep its natural oils from the cow, these are all removed and replaced during the re tanning process with a carefully balanced formulation which then is permanent. LEATHER DOES NOT NEED CONDITIONING with oils and on some occasions if these are added will do more harm than good. What leather loses is its moisture and it is this that needs replacing.

After cleaning leather using a leather cleaner keep on top if using a protection cream. This will help repel dirt and stains and so, make your leather easier to maintain.

We have an all-leather recliner which is just a year old, but needs cleaning especially on the arms. What type of cleaner should I use on the leather?
Thanks for your replies.

I would contact the manufacturer and ask what they recommend. generally on leather I use saddle soap. It works really well, doesn't smell and is safe around pets and kids! (09/07/2005)

RE: Cleaning Leather Furniture
Saddle soap is good to use for cleaning, a specialist product may be needed if the leather is very dirty. However if you just clean the leather it will start to dry out and can then start to crack, so after cleaning it is best condition the leather. (09/24/2005)
