When putting your dishwasher on, put your kitchen brushes into the cutlery basket with the bristles up and they will come out nicely cleaned and sterilised. I also put my dishcloth on the top rack, but safely, so that it won't drop down or stop any of the other items being properly washed.

make sure to rinse the dishcloth well of any liquid detergent. i once tried to freshen a used kitchen sponge in the dishwasher and it still had liquid dishsoap on it. the soap foamed up in the dishwasher and ran out the door seams onto the floor. dishwasher detergents are made especially not to foam. not so, for hand washing dish liquid.
