I was wondering I do i get rid of bats living on my trees. I look out my window and there's like cocoons everywhere all over my trees, and there's bats living in them. I want to get rid of them, they are everywhere. How would I go about getting them off my trees and away from my house?

I have a bat that is between my screen and storm window. He has been there for 2 months. He used to go out at night but barely leaves now. I can't open the bedroom window in fear he will enter. Is there anything I can use to scare him away, permanently?

Yes bats eat bugs - but in our case our entire house became infested with bugs brought into our house by the bats. These bugs are called bat bugs and they are a very close relative of the bed bug. Let me just tell you how stressful the entire ordeal was and we are still not over it yet. You need to seal up the areas where your bats are coming into your home that is step one. I recommend a professional - no it is not cheap - but who wants to fall off a roof or deal with being bitten? Also, the wildlife specialist we hired told me that bats cannot fly when they are on the ground - they have to "drop" before they are able to take off flying and I was told it is illegal to kill bats hence the hefty fee to trap and relocate them. But they are creatures that should be respected and they have a right to be here- just not in my house. good luck to everyone

We have some bats roosting overnight in the large umbrellas on our deck and next to our pool. I know that bats are great against bugs, and I find them rather cute looking (others may not agree, haha) but there must be a better place for the bats to sleep. The problem is that they keep leaving "messes" on the tables underneath, and every time my mom goes to open the umbrellas, she is greeted by a sleepy bat or two (my mother is one of those people who find bats NOT so cute)!

Is there any way we can build our own bat roost so we can keep the bats, but still let the bats live near us? Also, how do you get the bats to move into the new house? Thanks!

By the way, we live in the middle of the forest, so trees are quite abundant, if that changes anything!

I was at my pool and every 30 seconds a bat was hitting the water for a drink, what's the best way to get them away from my pool?

We have bats at our house too that live outside. They wouldn't be bad, except that they swarm and attack anytime anybody walks by. I am just afraid of them hurting or scaring my niece and nephew to death, or worse.

We recently opened our pool for the summer and now have a problem with bats flying down to the water! They may be good for bug control but are not good for the heart! Will lights keep them away? What about the sound blaster that is advertised? Help!

You need to hire someone to humanely trap the bats in the house and free them and seal up the place where they get in.

Bats outside? The more the merrier! They wont hurt you and if it was not for them, you would not be able to go outside because of all the bugs.

You should welcome them!

Has anyone had any success with those "bat houses" that are made out of wood and have compartments for the bats?

A bat was in the hallway of my apartment building and he somehow managed to fly in my apartment when I was coming back in from walking the dog. He flew back out a few minutes later (after I ran out screaming and left the door open) but I am still so freaked out about the ordeal that I'm afraid to even walk around my house or go back out for fear that he's still lurking there or will come back. I didn't see him come in the apt., he must have been really fast...and I didn't know he was there until I opened the refrigerator and HEARD HIM on top of the refrigerator (JUST ABOVE MY HEAD). He then started swooping all around my tiny apartment and I thought I would just die!!! I have never come this close to a bat before and it has freaked me out more than anything in my life. I don't care what anybody says about how good or harmless they are these things are creepy and I know that I'm going to have nightmares for a long time. This is the second time already that a bat has come into our hallway- and I pray it's the last because I am now already creeped out for life.

Anytime a bat is found in the house it usually indicates a bat colony in the walls, attic or soffet of the home. An inspection on the exterior of the home is needed. Once the entry point(s) are found, then a one-way-door is needed, this mearly allows the bats to exit but not re-enter when they go out at night to get their food and water. All other gaps/cracks/holes need to be sealed on the home so the bats just don't start coming in from another point. A large colony can also produce guano (poop) buil-up that should be removed.

I'm not sure I want to get rid of "our bat", and would appreciate some advice. A bat has taken up reidence in one of the market umbrellas on our deck. We leave them closed so I didn;t notice we had a "tenant" until I went to open the umbrella and noticed some droppings around the umbrella pole. I realized right away that it must be a bat, and that he was probably up in the folds of the closed umbrella. I opened the umbrella (very carefully so as not to startle him) , left it open for a short while, and soon he was gone. We had a rain storm, so I closed the umnrella and the next morning he was back in the folds of our umbrella. We have 2 umbrellas, but he seems to prefer only one of them. I opened the umbrella again and watched him fly into the woods. I don't want t have to leave the umbrella open all the time, but don't want any unsuspecting person to happen upon him unawares. What to do?

Hi Going Batty,
Here are some links that might help.

http://www.nwf.org/backyardwildlifehabitat/bathouse.cfm

http://www.usfarmnetwork.com/debugging.html

Because bats are beneficial in keeping insects away, mosquitoes especially it might be best to follow some of the advice in bat proofing your house but building them a bat house away from your dwelling. That way you won't have them flying around your house but will still get the benefit of their eating the insects.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!! I live in an older home that I just purchased, these bats are driving me mad. I have my young granddaughter here (7 months) right now and I'm going nuts. What do I do to rid my home once and for all. I can't figure out where they are coming from, I've seen them all over the house. The "wildlife" exterminators in my area are terribly expensive, is there anything I can do myself?

We found out obout this accidently through a friend......This works 100%.....first you get the bats out of where ever they are....ours were living in an vent under the roof overhang, then, while they are gone, hang a mobile which you've made out of small double sided mirrors..this mobile should be big enough to cover the area they or getting into. we did this and no more bats got in there...must mess with their radar and then they can't "see" to get in their "hang-out" We had friends that discovered this in a porch area that always had a couple of bats and they hung up a mirrored mobile and no more bats...I thought it was worth trying and it worked!!!!

A bat flew on my shoulder while I was outside in the morning and I didn't realize it until I came into my house and now it is hiding in my son's bedroom! How can I get it out of my house???????????? I hate to kill it but I will if neccessary. We had a bat in our basement last year and it ended up stuck to a sticky spider trap so that's how we got rid of that one. I may try putting some sticky spider traps in my son's room in hopes that this new bat gets stuck too! Any other suggestions?????

I just noticed droppings on our porch last week.. This evening I turned on the porch light and realized that there is one bat that has taken roost in one of the upper corners of the porch. The droppings are making me worry due to having 2 children that are 2 and 5 years old. Any suggestions? The bat isn't in an enclosed area, it just hangs there during the night in a corner and leaves a pretty good number of droppings that fall to the cement porch every night.....

I dont know about the bug eating thing ? I am surrounded by trees in my rear yard and evey evening these pesky bats swoop down to drink form my swimming pool. Needless to say it makes swimming at night non- existant. As far as them eating bugs or a "bug-free yard" nope! I get eatin alive by mosquitos as the bats are darting around my head. Mosquito killers I'll take , head hunters I wont !

This bat appeared in our bedroom - so we moved to the spare bedroom. Then this (possibly another) bat appeared, so I convinced my wife it was the first one and then I caught it in a glass jar (you know, the big cookie jars?) and slid a magazine under the jar and took the bat outside. That seemed to resolve the bat problem until tonight when we got back from dinner with some friends.

My wife reported a bat in the belfry (oops, bedroom) and as I had released the first bat from the cookie jar I convinced her it was the first bat again. Then I caught it in the cookie jar again. But then another bat appeared (which could have been a search party sent out to find the first bat). So I caught that one in another cookie jar. BUT....

Now I have run out of cookie jars and my wife will not go to bed in case there is a third one looking for the first two. What can I do short of beating them to death each time they appear?

In truth I hate killing things, so is there some way I can scare the bats away without recourse to murder?

Alfred

(It's a JOKE - Batman's butler was called Alfred.....) Ho hum....

The best site I've found on Bat control is here.

http://www.batcon.org/

Bottom line: you need to find out where they get in and give them a one-way door out. Then (in about a week to make sure they are gone) use a sealant (caulk) to close their entrance for good.

The web site said that electronic devices don't work (too bad for me!) and killing them may leave nasty, decaying carcasses and poison potential for the family pets. So, if you can build a one-way exit, the bats will find another place. Additionally, if you build them another place to live - in conjunction with evicting them from your attics - you'll serve them and yourself at the same time.

I am not a person who likes to kill anything and of all the pests to have I'm glad it's this one but on a note about having them. If you get a bunch can't their poo make you sick? and also isn't it flammable? I really don't need bat crap in my basement or catching my house on fire.

I read an article recently that bats eat 10,000 mosquitoes an hour. Sound like a good mosquito controller to me.

Although I have no ideas about how to get rid of bats, I have a question: why would you want to? They normally don't bother people, and they're wonderful for keeping mosquitoes and other night time nibblers away. We had one that lived on our front porch for a year or more, and now that he's gone I miss having him fly over our heads once it started getting dark! Call me crazy, but I'm seriously considering some bat houses to attract more to my yard.

If you can't get rid of them, take comfort in the fact that you've probably got an incredibly bug-free yard in exchange. I wish I could get some bats to roost near our house!

Hello Ashley,
Bats don't like the light-so either decorate your trees with outdoor 'Fairy' lights or string unwanted CD's to the branches. These reflect any light and might deter them.
They also dislike the smell of Cedar.
Click the link to find some more tips for your problem.

I hope this helps, good luck.
