When the ac in our VW starting smelling, the mechanic suggested turning the air conditioner off but leaving the fan on. That way you blow out and dry out any tubing.

Run the air conditioner, at least ten minutes every week, regardless of season. This procedure will maintain coolant pressure and avoid costly air conditioner breakdowns.
