This does not leave a residue like some sprays you purchase in the supermarket on the laundry aisle.

In a spray bottle mix equal parts of hand dishwashing soap, water and ammonia. Shake and pretreat stains, rub fabric together and wash as usual.

I use the same pre-spotter as Lisa, but in slightly different amounts - 1 cup Dawn (excellent grease-cutter), 1 cup non-sudsing ammonia and 2 cups water - and I have to say it's at least as good as anything you can buy. My only caveat is to use it right before washing the clothing because I have had it stain certain materials. This doesn't happen if I let it set a minute or two (no longer), then throw it in the wash.

I got this from, I think, Cheaper & Better book.
I think it works well, I use it all the time.

Pre-wash Mix

1/2 cup ammonia
1/2 cup white vinegar
1/4 cup baking soda
2 Tbsp. liquid soap
2 quarts water

Mix and put into spray bottles.

I do this, except I use cheap shampoo instead as it removes most greasy/oily stains from anything.
