Thoroughly cream sugar and shortening. Sift flour with salt, baking powder and soda. Add to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk. Add nuts, dates, cranberries and orange rind. Bake in a greased tube pan at 350 degrees F for 1 hour or until cake tests done with a tester. Combine sugar and orange juice. Pour over cake while it is still warm. Let stand 24 hours. Serve with whipped cream. Serves 12-16.
