Treatment for Skinned Knees

When your children get skinned knees, a better cleaner is aerosol shave cream. The kids love the foaming action, and it doesn't sting like soap. Then wipe off gently with a damp soft cloth. Repeat if needed. Then apply your favorite antibiotic ointment (the ones with lidocaine help soothe the pain) and a bandage.

Just a hint here on the use of antibiotic ointments - they are contraindicated for use on skin scrapes and grazes. A healthy body is quite capable of containing and killing any bacteria on the surface of a wound if the surface is kept moist with an occlusive wound dressing. This type of dressing also speeds healing and reduces scarring. The overuse of antibiotics and antibacterial creams and liquids in the home and on minor wounds is a waste of money and leads to antibiotic resistance so when you get a serious infection the antibiotics can be ineffective. For an infected wound - that is one which is swollen and hot with increasing pain a course of antibiotic tablets may be indicated. Otherwise a good wash and a dressing is all that's needed.
