Vacuuming is the best way to maintain your carpet. For deep cleaning, hiring a professional is the best way. Those home cleaning machines can sometimes leave behind too much water which can cause mold.

Also, walking barefoot on your carpet is bad. The carpet absorbs the oils from your skin, which then attracts more dirt. Wear clean socks when walking on your carpet.

Here is a great example solution when it comes to handling ballpen (ink) stains.

Step 1. Isopropyl rubbing alcohol can be purchased at your grocery store or department store.

Step 2. Apply it by pouring some onto a clean, white towel or other cloth. Paper towels can be used as long as they are white.

Step 3. Blot until as much as possible until stain is removed.

Step 4. Be careful. If the stain is small, blot in one direction only so that you do not spread the stain.

If not successful, here is the other option.

Use Ammonia solution: One teaspoon of clear, household type ammonia to a half of a cup of water. This solution can be used in a spray bottle or be applied to the carpet directly. It is important not to wet the carpet's backing when apply. After applying solution, use white paper towels to blot. Allow to dry completely.

For spot cleaning... mix vinegar and water. Works like magic ! Spray on carpet or you can spray on cloth and dab.

Folex is a fantastic product. It seems like the Folex works much better than everything else we've tried.

I found a product at Wal-Mart called "SPOT SHOT". It removes EVERYTHING! My husband dropped a can of brown paint on our light tan carpet. We had a professional carpet cleaner come out, and while they got some of the paint out, there was a lot of brown spots left. Deciding we would have to recarpet, I thought I would give SPOT SHOT a try, and believe it or not, it removed ALL the brown spots. YEA!!!

When cleaning carpets use Bissell Fiber Cleansing Formula with scotchgard and have a bottle of Folex handy. Spray it on stubborn spots which are few in number that won't come out with the Bissell cleaner. It removes pet accidents, grease, grime, and most old stains. Excellent for upholstery is what the bottle says and it worked wonders on my carpet. I have a tan carpet and it had not been cleaned in over a year. With lots of kids and animals well you can't even guess what this carpet looked like. But between the Bissell carpet cleaner and the Folex my whole carpet except one spot became sparkling clean. I am very happy with with these two products. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect my carpet to look like this! <http://www.bissell.com> <http://www.folexcompany.com/>

Carpet cleaning should be a part time job all on its own. Some say that carpets are easy to care for and maintain - I say 'only when you hire someone to do the carpet cleaning for you'.

However, to keep your carpet looking presentable and help it to last longer, there are some carpet cleaning duties that you can do on a regular basis, like vacuuming and cleaning up spills immediately.

Here are five (5) carpet cleaning tips to help you maintain and care for your carpet.

1. Create a carpet cleaning schedule.

Your carpet cleaning schedule should include, how often you intend to vacuum, your carpet cleaning system and when and who will implement your system.

Dust accumulation is your carpet's enemy. Regular vacuuming will reduce the dust level in your carpet.

Two of the most popular carpet cleaning systems are steam cleaning (hot water extraction), and dry carpet cleaning. The use of either of these methods when done properly will remove oils, greases and whatever stains that finds itself on your carpet.

2. Clean spills immediately.

It is a fact. The longer spills remain on your carpet the harder it is to clean them. Deal with them as soon as possible before you're faced with irremovable stains.

3. Use doorway mats.

Using mats at entrances to carpeted rooms will help reduce the amount of dust that would have ended up on your carpet. NOTE: Keep these rugs vacuumed.

4. Your carpet cleaning supplies.

Carpet cleaners can be mild or very strong. Most contain chemicals which are highly dangerous like, hydrofluoric acid, tetrachloroethylene and butoxyethanol.

When using these products please read the manufactures instructions carefully and take the necessary precautions like wearing gloves and using goggles.

5. Hire a carpet cleaning professional.

This is my most favorite thing to do. Let someone else worry about it.

When choosing a carpet cleaning professional be sure you ask for references. Your carpet is an investment, you shouldn't trust it with just anyone.

I hope that these carpet cleaning tips are helpful to you. Take good care of your carpets.
