When traveling to your destination, where ever it might be:
- Do lots of research before going, easy to do on internet.
- Stay off the beaten path, always use maps.
- Don't fall for the tourist trap stuff (way too expensive). Don't eat at the name brand places, eat at the local hangouts and eat the way the natives do (they know where to eat out cheaply).
- When you are traveling, you have lots of unplanned expenses to be prepared for like flat tires, breakdowns, etc., as they do happen, most likely when you're least expecting it. So be prepared.

If you are 55 or older or one of you is 55 or older, Elderhostel.org has inexpensive vacations if you want a learning vacation. Check out their on-line catalog. Prices include lodging, meals and transportation...sometimes more sometimes less, but always a good value if your interests match what they offer.
