I work for a health unit in North Dakota and we do a lot of mold complaints. Mold comes in a variety of colors ranging from white to black. Excessive mold in a house can be a problem but realistically every house has some mold because the spores are very small and can travel easily on the air. To the person who said mold will eventually come back if it is cleaned properly and soft substances removed (soft substances include drywall, sheetrock, ceiling tiles, wood products, and carpeting) you can prevent reoccurance of mold as long as you have repaired any water leaks, use a fan to vent excess mositure from bathrooms etc., and use a dehumidifyer. I am attaching a link a PDF file put out by the North Dakota Department of Health this information sheet talks all about Mold in the Home. It explains what it is, where it can grow, health effects, and cleaning proceedures. Hope this helps.

It's often black or amber colored. It starts as little dots and as it multiplies the dots come together and form patches. Sometimes it has a slimy feel or a bad odor. Mold can cause allergic symptoms, like sneezing, even if you can't see it(like under the house). Bleach will kill most molds and mildews. Mix 1 cup of bleach into 2 gallons of water. Wear a safety mask and spray on the mold. It will come back eventually, especially if you live in a hot, humid climate but you can spray as often as needed.
