Waterproofing Wicker Furniture

Is there a way to waterproof wicker furniture?

I have several nice pieces of wicker furniture and I have been told by several people that they should be soaked in water twice a year. So, unless they are subjected to it every day, perhaps they need it. Any thoughts you smart people can give her and I would be great.
