Craft Project: Denim Coffee Cozy

This is a denim coffee cozy for those fancy hot coffees sold at coffee bars or the frozen ones that are so good!

Approximate Time: 25 minutes

Supplies:

  • scraps of denim
  • scissors
  • cardboard template from a commercial coffee cup
  • sewing machine
  • sewing thread
  • large button
  • one elastic hair band
  • scraps from an old kitchen placemat or mattress pad

Instructions:

Take the cardboard coffee cup you kept from the last coffee you enjoyed and use the paper cozy as a template for your coffee cozy. Lay onto your denim and cut one piece for the front and one for the back.

Cut a piece of an old quilted placemat or an old mattress pad and place the top piece on top and the bottom piece on the bottom. Notice I didn't leave any seam allowance. Just make the "sandwich" of fabrics and topstitch, leaving the seams "raw".

Throw this into the washing machine (I made several at a time and just threw them in with my colors when I did the laundry) to deliberately fray the edges. Dry in the dryer. Steam to get the wrinkles out.

Take the cozy and place on the cup as the cardboard one had fit the cup to determine where to sew the button for closure. Mark the spot with a washable fabric marker and sew the button in place.

Lay the elastic hair band on the other side and pin into place. Zig zag stitch in place with the sewing machine.
