Because of nightly teeth grinding I was told by my dentist that I needed to wear a plastic mouth guard to save my teeth. He would fit it. The cost, $500, I'm not kidding. That was way out of my price range. Wal-Mart carries the Doctors Mouth Guard for only $20. I fit it myself, and it worked great. But wait, this cheap little piece of plastic didn't seem worth $20. I strolled over to the sporting goods department, and found a clear plastic mouth guard for 97 cents. Again, it moulded to my teeth to perfection. I just love when I save $499.03.

I tried those same options, but they say, "Not for TMJ" on the box. I've bought several over the counter ones, from sports guards to the ones at the pharmacy. Even the $45 one at the pharmacy and TMJ got worse. TMJ got so bad from those that I just paid the $575 for a custom dental guard made for TMJ. The over the counter ones flex and do not stop your muscles from contracting and spasming, that is why they are not made for TMJ. If it works for teeth grinding that is good, but don't use if you really have TMJ. Plus most dental offices offer a credit line through a third party to make payments.

My Mother also bought the sports mouth peice. She then dipped it in boiling water, waited a few seconds and placed it in her mouth and bit down on it until it was entirely cooled. VIOLA! A custom fitted $500 mouth peice for under a dollar.
