Freshen a Ferret Cage

I have been hanging a plastic sandwich bag, open, on the outside of the cage with a 1/8 teaspoon of vanilla in it. It seems to help freshen the area around the cage. Any other ferret freshness ideas?

I also put linoleum on the bottom of the cage in places, so it can have a place to lay down and I put t shirts and towels in there for her to cuddle in. She is so sweet! I reach in with a sandwich bag on my hand to pick up what I need to.

Such an adorable pet. I also found out aloe wipes repel fleas in very young kittens so she gets aloe wipe baths often. :)

Lady Lacy Lovebug (Yorkie)

Lady Lacy Lovebug is a 5 year old Yorkie. I got her one year ago, rescued from a puppy mill. She likes to have her tummy rubbed. When we first got her, Lacy was very shy. It took a long time to get her to come out from under the furniture. She is still scared of newspaper, and loud voices. But she is my heart and I am so thankful to have her.

In Memory of Fancy (Himalayan)

Fancy was a five year old Himalayan. Fancy was given to me five years ago. She was given away because the owner didn't want her any more. Fancy was the perfect pet.

She was always trying to jump into your lap. She was kept inside and was great at catching mice. She loved laying on the porch swing. Fancy was always an inside pet, until last year when she got a taste of the great outdoors and wouldn't stay inside anymore.

Fancy was attacked in my yard by five big dogs. I heard the fight underneath the house. I couldn't find her until she dragged herself to the porch the next morning. She was completely covered in mud . You couldn't even tell that she was a cat. I cleaned her and tried to feed her, but she passed away the next day.

Contests:

These contests are weekly. We pick 2 tip winners and 1 photo winner at the end of each week. Each winner will win $25!

Today's Tips:

Make Your Own Bath Salts

You can make your own bath salts by using the following ingredients.

  • Herbs from the back yard. Lemon balm, lavender, and sage work really well.

  • Sea Salt or soaking salts.

  • Glass jar with lid.

Pick the herb you want to use. In the glass jar, start layering the salts and herbs, starting with a layer of salt and ending with a layer of salt. Close the lid tightly and store the jar in a dark place (I use the back of my closet) for two weeks to one month. Then pour out the salts and throw away the herbs.

Place the salts in decorative containers and enjoy or give as gifts. I use empty plastic food sprinkle containers decorated with stickers.

Keep Track of Gifts from Year to Year

From year to year, we don't remember what we gave as gifts for occasions. If we attend the bar mitzvah of a friend's child, it would be nice to know how much we wrote the check for so, when their second child has his bar mitzvah, we can go back and see what we gave his brother so there is not such a disparity. I have created an Excel spreadsheet which I call "What we gave."

Column A is the name of the person we gave a gift to. Column B is the gift or amount of check. Column C is the occasion (Christmas, Bar mitzvah, Birthday). Column D is the date.

From year to year I had trouble remembering what gift we gave our cleaning lady for Christmas, what we gave the beautician who has done my hair for over 20 years. Also, much to my chagrin, I've noticed that I don't remember things like I used to when I was younger. This is a big help!

This is also helpful in logging what people gave us for gifts (my husband, my son, myself). If someone gave my son $150 for a bar mitzvah gift, I am not going to give her son only $100. Anyway, it helps me a lot.

Recycle All Egg Cartons

I keep all the containers eggs come packaged in. You can use them to place eggs in from your local farmer's market. If you don't buy your eggs there, you can take your containers, and donate them to the vendors.

Many eggs come in foam containers and they do not break down like cardboard ones in the land fill. But cardboard of all types can be recycled as well in many ways. We should all try to keep as much out of the landfills and recycle as much as possible.

If you don't craft, I'm sure you know someone who does or you can save your items and post on freecycle. Don't be timid about placing recycle ads because all types of items are placed there for re-use.

Please Go Green everybody. Our kids and grand kids futures depend on it!

Reuse Receipts as Note Paper

For those of us who save receipts throughout the month in that envelope, shoebox, file etc, stop before you throw away the receipts at months end! Use the blank back side of receipts to write on! Perfect for making lists/writing small notes etc.

I have one of those little notepads (wooden one), with the clip at one end and I clip the receipts blank side up on that (envelopes, paperclips, staples can also be used).

You can even decoupage the pad with receipts (Yeah, yeah I love paper!).

Homemade "Space Bags"

Instead of buying those high priced bags to store things in like clothes and bedding etc., you can take the garbage bags, fill it up with jackets or bedding or what ever. Then put the vacuum cleaner hose in it, and suck the air out then tie of and it will do the same thing as those high priced bags. I have stored many things that way for a long time. They work great.

Mayonnaise for Hair Conditioner

Save on hair conditioner by going to your refrigerator! If you use mayonnaise you have a great hair conditioner. Being a retired beautician it was a trick I learned way back in school.

If you do not have colored hair, just take enough mayonnaise to cover your hair, let it set out to warm up. If you have access to a hairdryer you can set under cover your hair tightly with a plastic bag or shower cap and set under the hairdryer for 10 minutes.

If you don't have the hairdryer, dampen a towel with hot water and wrap it around your hair, when it cools, dampen it with hot water again. You will need to leave the mayo on for 30 min. by this method.

Wash with your normal shampoo. I do this at least once a year and my hair has never been damaged.

Organizing Photos On Your Camera

I love to take pictures, but I don't love trying to remember where one day ends and the next begins as I go to catalog my digital photos as I upload them to my computer after a long trip. On our last vacation I finally found a solution.

We had visited 6 civil war battlefields and since they are so much alike, I decided that when we left one battlefield and were driving to the next one, I would take a picture of the clock in our car. When I went to upload the pictures and label them, I had no problem knowing which was the last picture of one battlefield and which was the start of the next one. This might come in handy as the Christmas season approaches as well!

Safe Flea Bath for Cats

I'm looking for advice regarding my cat. It's allergic to flea collars, spot-on treatments are too expensive, but he doesn't mind getting bathed and rinsed with Cat Flea shampoo. Temperatures are in the early 30's Celsius he enjoys being cooled down, but too much bathing is counter-productive I think. Powders aren't effective.

Can anyone suggest a tried and true anti-flea washing product that won't be absorbed and kill him? I'm hoping he hasn't developed a dermatitis to fleas and needs cortisone or similar injections.
Any help gratefully received.

Crate Training a Puppy

My 11-week old female LabraDoodle, that we have had for about 9 days now is "not" taking to her crate well. Initially, she was going in there (her crate), on her own accord and even taking "pup naps" in there with the door open. But, now we have to literally shove her in there at night and when we leave for work.

We know not to use the crate as a punishment and we've not. But, these past few days it's been a chore to get her in there. She doesn't make a mess in there when she's in there. It's just that we do not sleep at night anymore.

She will not eat if her food is in the crate, however, she will eat if it is within a few inches of the opening. I need some suggestions and help that work with a full-time person who doesn't have time to pamper the pup with 2 hour breaks and such. Thank you. This is our and my first dog/puppy.
