Can you eat portabella mushrooms raw?

Yes, they are called crimini when they are smaller and are sold next to button mushrooms. They can be used just the same as regular button mushrooms. The flavor is a bit stronger but just as good. The larger portobellos tend to be denser, so you may want to slice them thinly if you are planning on eating them raw. They are probably better cooked when larger.
