My fairly small bedroom is painted a beautiful, but unfortunately, pretty dark blue - sort of royal blue. I would like to keep the color, but maybe lighten it in some way - maybe some sort of glaze rag rolled on or something. Anyone have any ideas that aren't terribly expensive?

You can make a 'wash' from white or off-white latex paint, thinned w/ water to a milky consistency.Wear gloves & use a rag or big sponge to wipe the wash over the painted walls in a circular motion - just like you were washing the walls.Start @ the top & work your way down to avoid drips. You just kind of rub it in - sort of like doing a wood stain.

This won't give a perfectly smooth result - it resembles smoke or mist.

I recommend adding beige or white accents. that will really lighten up the room and give contrast to your dark blue. Curtains, photo frames, lamps, rugs plant pots. It will also make your room look very clean. I wouldn't touch the paint at all.

You could buy inexpensive light colored curtains or blinds. If there is woodwork, paint that white, or a light color. You could also get a light colored bedspread/quilt to brighten up the room
