Pop Bottle Bird Feeder

Make yourself a quick and sturdy bird feeder by poking or cutting round or "X" shaped holes in a large 2 litter plastic pop bottle then hang it from a rope to a tree branch. You'll need a funnel to help fill it with seeds. You can also run a stick or dowel straight through the bottle if you want the birds to have a place to perch. If you want a cover for the feeder, you can use an old burner drip tray (from an electric stove top). This will sit over the top of the bottle. Simply thread the hanging rope through the hole in the center of the burner tray. Recycling at it's best!

How do you keep the bird seed from falling out of a pop bottle bird feeder?

RE: Pop Bottle Bird Feeder

If your seed is falling out of the holes, I would use a small square or circle cut out of an old screen and hot glue it to the outside of the bottle, then decorate if you wish. Remember to hot glue the spoons or dowels in their holes also, birds won't/can't "perch" if the wood spins. (03/12/2009)

What you have to do is leave the top on when you hang it upside down but you have to drill tiny holes and have pegs the same size as the holes. Push the pegs through from one side straight across to the other side of the bottle so it goes through the other side and is straight. You can do this quite a few times. Then fill the bottle with the bird seed.

Above the pegs, you need to put a very tiny hole above all the pegs on each side. You will have to devise a way to hang your bottle. Or leave it right side up and hang the bottle with a small twine around the neck but you will still have to drill the holes as above. (04/04/2009)

Tip: Pop Bottle Bird Feeder

Here's an easy bird feeder that can be made from a painted 2 litre pop bottle.

Materials

  • 2 litre soda bottle
  • spray paint
  • knife
  • wooden spoon
  • acrylic paint
  • sealer
  • yarn

Instructions

First cut a hole in the bottle next to the bottom as in picture. Spray paint the bottle, let dry. Paint on your favorite design, let dry. Spray with sealer and let dry. Tie yarn around top of bottle to hang it up with, put spoon through holes and fill with seeds. Hang up and enjoy all the birds that will be visiting.

Forgive me, but where does the seed come out and how do the birds get to the seeds in the bottom of the jug? (06/12/2007)

RE: Pop Bottle Bird Feeder

The spoon you see is the perch for the birds to sit on to eat the seeds, and the spoon is also through the hole that the seeds come out of. You can see the spoon through the hole in the picture. Sorry if I wasn't clear enough for everyone. sandyb125 (06/13/2007)

That's a cute idea and I always have those bottles in the recycle bin. Wooden spoons are at the thrift store for about a dime. My winter birdies thank you. (09/27/2007)

This is a great idea. I teach elementary kids on Saturdays and this is a great craft, it teaches about recycling and animal awareness. Thank you. (11/16/2008)
