I had a long hair daschshund and have a wire haired now. Tangles were/are a constant.

You can try rubbing a bit of cornstarch into the tangle and using your fingers to gently unmat the fur. If your dog tolerates brushing, a wide bristle brush can be used to gently unmat small sections at a time

If you use the cornstarch, a gentle oatmeal bath after will get the residue of the cornstarch out of the fur.

If the mats are too bad, you may need to shave the area.we have had to do that quite often.

Avoid using anything with essenital oils. Avoid sprays as the propellant can be dangerous to the pup.

If you are looking for a good way to detangle dogs you can use a good conditionier mixed with water and a little vinegar in the bottle. You should use 1 part conditionier, 3 parts water, and 2 Tablespoon of vinegar. This is what I use in a spray bottle and spray on the dog. I also have gone to the pet store and bought a special comes for tangles.

This is not expensive and works wonders on the tangles in the dog's hair. It has a curve on the comb and small teeth inside that have a V on them. You just need to put the cuve under the tangle and then slowly turn the comb to break it up.
