You can buy them but not cheap. Also your local Trim and Moulding Company can make them from FOAM and you can paint any color. That is cheaper. (08/22/2007)

I'd imagine something out of a block of styrofoam and some marbled paint - but Hobby Lobby rents/sells theirs pretty cheap, and places like Artisan Designs sell them for a pretty decent price as well (http://artesiandesigns.com/bac.html). When they had the olympics here in L.A. years ago - they painted large cardboard tubes for pillars. If you can find them (from industrial use) that might work....

For a high school play, the art teacher used that corregated roofing material and bent it into a tube. It was painted a cream color with a darker color sponged over the cream. It looked like real marble. (08/23/2007)

I see that this is too late to help you Beverly, but perhaps someone else could get some ideas they could use.

For our daughter's wedding in '05, we made 19 - 8 ft. tall columns and placed them around the gymnasium. We purchased 2'x2'x4' cardboard boxes from U-line, taped them end to end, painted them cream and spread drywall compound on them with a large putty knife, leaving a very rough texture. After they dried (took a couple days), they looked like stone.

Then we spiraled a strand of twinkle lights from bottom to top and tucked artificial ivy into the lighting wire. Using tulle, I had made 12' tubes that fit very loosely over the columns, pinning it in a few places to make sure the tulle didn't just hang straight down.

For stability, we put fishing line around the top of each column and attached it to a hook on the wall. Vining blue flowers and ribbon rested on top of each column and hung down.

We made them that tall because we then strung another set of twinkle lights from the top of each column and attached it to a cable stretched from one basketball goal to the other in the gym and wanted people to be able to safely walk under the lights. We wrapped tulle around each string of lights, as well as around the strings of lights and the cable running from goal to goal.

This, and 5 candles on each table, was the only lighting in the gym. (We used large sheets of white paper and just pleated it to make fans to cover the orange "target" area on each basketball goal.)

We also ordered some 2'x2'x3' and 2'x2'2' boxes and made several shorter pillars (ivy and tulle on each) and set a rented Boston fern on top.

From a local greenhouse, we rented 15-8' tall flowering trees and strung each with twinkle lights. (Used 7,000 twinkle lights purchased for less than a $1/box at after Christmas sales.)

We were really pleased with how great everything looked! Needless to say, we had a lot of help from wonderful friends!
