Save the tubes from paper towels. They make a good thing to roll up a small banner or poster: i.e. Happy Birthday.

don't forget about using the tubes that wrapping paper comes on...these work great for anything as you can always cut it down to the size you need!
Scrap pieces of PVC pipe is great as well. It is solid so if something accidently gets set on the tube, it doesn't get crushed.
