My dog has dry scaly skin in his ear, which he scratches non stop. What could it be caused by? I don't know what ear mites look like.

Please take your dog to the Veterinarian so the Vet can take a scraping of the scales in your dog's ear. He will then look at it under a microscope and determine if your dog has ear mites. Your Vet can prescribe any medication that is necessary to treat this condition. You pet's ears are painful, please go asap. Good luck.
Ear mites only appear as dark looking patches. I agree. He needs to be seen by a vet.
You don't have to know what ear mites look like but you will know the Veterinary cost when the poor animal scratches it's ear into an Hematoma please consult your Vet good luck
