Bronze Post Medal for All Time! 181 Posts

To remove grease and automotive oil from cotton clothing, rub shortening into the stain and then overlap with a paste of water and laundry detergent, rubbing it into the material. Wash as usual.

I was given this advice over 40 years ago when my washing machine broke and the motor leaked black grease/oil onto the clothes the tub. One of the items was an irreplaceable quilt that I had sewn. Essentially, I was diluting the greasy black dirt with the shortening, and then removing all of it. It was somewhat labor intensive (grease was all over everything) but worked like a charm.

The easiest way to clean black grease from clothes is to rub lard or Crico (plain, not butter flavor) into the grease, then launder as usual. It takes the grease right out!
