Basic White Sauce

Yield: 1 cup

Ingredients:

This recipe makes 1 cup of sauce. The photos are of me making a 3 cup batch.

Steps:

  1. In a heavy saucepan, melt butter over low heat.

  3. Stir in flour and cook over low heat for three minutes, stirring constantly. NOTE: Do not allow the mixture to brown.

  5. Gradually stir in milk. Continue to stir constantly. Cook over low heat until mixture begins to thicken. Add salt and pepper, to taste.
  6. OPTIONAL: If you are making a cheese sauce, now is the time to add your cheese and heat until completely melted. Remember to stir continuously.
