Getting Hair Back to Natural Color After Dyeing?

I have heard that you have to wait three months to dye your hair back or at least to a color close to your natural hair. How much true is this? What I am asking is can you re-dye after a month or so after dyeing it?

Waiting six weeks is optimal. I've shot for 4 weeks when I was desperate for change but that came with a trim and conditioning treatments
