What Is This Houseplant?

What Is This Houseplant? plant with leaves growing horizontally from stemI found this plant at the transfer station today. Someone had thrown it in the dumpster with no pot and the roots exposed. I rescued it, brought it home and potted it. (Pretty much all of my houseplants are "rescues" of some sort- I call myself the orphaned plant lady!)

I have no idea what it is, it seems fairly healthy with a couple of new leaves emerging from these reddish hollow tube-like things. The leaf stems are very thick reddish-brown and flat on the up-facing side and rounded underneath. The leaves themselves are very large, about 8-10" long and half as wide.

It looks a bit like a caladium. There are different varieties. Some with more purple leaves but there are some that are pretty green too.
