Lilac bushes prefer neutral to alkaline soil. If after performing a soil test you've determined that your soil leans toward the acidic side of the pH scale, amending your soil with eggshells can definitely help raise pH levels. Eggshells can be added to the soil anytime. Pulverize them and sprinkle them around your lilac bushes, gently turning them into the top few inches of your soil. Take care not to damage any roots and water thoroughly to help leech the eggshells into the soil. Clam or oyster shells, wood ash or powdered or dolomitic calcitic lime will also work. Amend with a small amount this fall, re-test in the spring and add more amendments as necessary.

Lilacs love eggshells, and give your coffee grounds to your acid loving plants. Don't forget to give those banana peels to your roses, and if you know someone who raises bunnies... their pellets are pure alfalfa for your roses! Also keep oranges & grapefruit out of your compost... makes it too acidic.

You can make short work of eggshells by putting dry ones in a plastic, but I prefe paper bag and hit them with a mallet or roll with a rolling pin. Then BURY them around the base of the plant, but not deeply. You do not want to disturb the roots. Your plants will show their love with even more flowers for you to enjoy. Apply a couple of egg shells crushed once a month if you feel the need. I hope I have answered your questions.
